Chapter Ten

“WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING at?”

Barker laid his head down between her paws and gave Coty a reproachful look. She then closed her eyes.

“I didn’t think so.”

The chair squeaked when Coty leaned back on two legs to glare at the sleeping dog. “I suppose you could have done a better job?”

Without moving so much as another muscle, Barker opened an eye but then closed it again, as if Coty were disturbing her.

“I admit I shouldn’t have been so grumpy but what else could I do? If Amanda stayed here, we would have been kissing and then how would I ever have let her go. I know I should, and you know I should. You know as well as I do that I’m no good for her.”

Balancing on the chair’s back legs, Coty waited in vain for Barker to acknowledge him again. The golden retriever kept his eyes closed. Disgusted with such little reaction from his best friend, Coty looked out the kitchen window as he listened to the sound of footsteps above his head. The three of them had clearly gone to Amanda’s third floor apartment. Of course they had. Why shouldn’t they? She had every right to take them there. Nick was probably hungry since it was so late and Frances probably hadn’t fed the kid all day.

Frances was a terrible mother. Jack had been crazy with worry about Nick when his ex-wife had disappeared without word. The time away from his son had almost driven the man crazy.

Coty should be happy for him but it ate at his heart knowing that Jack might be falling in love with Amanda.

“Serves me right, doesn’t it? I’ve been throwing them together for weeks now. I told Amanda to date other men. What did I think was going to happen? This is what I wanted, isn’t it?”

When he slammed his hand onto the kitchen counter, several spoons and folks clattered in the drainer. The noise disturbed Barker and she lifted her head to see what was going on.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you up. There’s really no point in both of us suffering here. Go back to sleep and I’ll try to keep the noise down.”

Barker cocked her head to see what Coty was going to do next, but he just went into the living room.

There were sounds of tiny footsteps running overhead and every now and then high pitched screeches of happiness drifted down.

“Nick must be having fun. Good. I’m going to be happy for everyone up there. If Amanda and Jack get together, that’s a good thing. Amanda will have a great guy she can depend on. Jack will have a woman with a kind heart and someone who will never let him down. Nick would have a good set of role models; the perfect family. That’s a good thing.”

Depressed and discouraged, he slumped against the hallway door frame.

He closed his eyes against his mental and physical pain. “It’s only a good thing if I don’t have to see it every day.
