LOTUS BLOSSOM
The next day of the trip changed Don’s life forever — and the lives of so many others since. He continues:
“We arrived at another village, and there were dead animals floating in the river. You couldn’t breathe if you got close to the riverbank. And yet, they were living right beside it all. We soon found the little girl we had come to see. Her name was Lotus Blossom. She hadn’t been told we were bringing a wheelchair, because her mother didn’t want her heart to break if we didn’t show up.
“We walked in to her family’s hut, and there she was, lying on her stomach on a mat. She opened one eye to look at us. She was a gorgeous little girl, even though she was clearly unhealthy. Mike (the surgeon) had her sit up and had her flex her toes, and then did a few other tests. He told me she had muscular dystrophy and would never walk, but she was a perfect candidate for the wheelchair. When Mike picked her up and put her in the wheelchair, a group of kids went outside to remove all the rocks from the path. When they returned, they took Lotus out for her first ride. Her mother said she had never seen her so happy. Lotus’s smile was so radiant and beautiful, and her mother had tears streaming down her face. And she wasn’t alone. Everybody started getting choked up about the whole thing. This experience totally changed Mike’s life. He eventually became the medical director for Free Wheelchair Mission and he’s been with us ever since.
“By the end of the week, we had given away the other two wheelchairs. The India missions team made sure to drive me around to show me all the disabled people who needed them. I could see the need was huge, but I had to return home.”
Meanwhile, when Don returned to California, he learned the large company he worked for had inexplicably gone bankrupt. He spent the next few weeks networking with other people, trying to locate a new job. But in every conversation he had, he would end up telling them about his trip to India and the wheelchairs. Something else was becoming clear as well: everyone he spoke to wanted to help him with the wheelchair project, but nobody seemed to have a job for him.
After a few months, Don realized God had actually given him a new job: the wheelchair mission. He hasn’t looked back since.
In Don’s words, “Suddenly my life became freer and easier. I didn’t worry about having to solve everything. I prayed and asked, well, God, whatever is going to happen is up to you. And through this process of defining what our mission and vision was, we decided we’re going to give away wheelchairs but we’re going to do it in the name of Jesus. That’s pretty much it: transforming lives with the gift of mobility in the poor and developing world through the teachings of Jesus.
