Chapter Thirteen

Everleigh

“Hey.” Bristow held up the tablet in his hand. “We need to let Valinor in on what’s going on.”

I nodded and blew out a long breath. “What do we say? How do we explain this?”

“We just tell the truth.”

Bristow handed the tablet to me. “Hail Valinor,” I said, dread churning in my belly.

The call took only seconds to connect. Galton and Soraya answered.

“Bristow! Everleigh! We were beginning to worry. How is it going?”

I swallowed hard. Galton hated me enough already. He was going to hate me even more now. Before I could speak, Bristow leaned in.

“We have the cure and Huxley and I will be returning with it shortly. We tested it in the water and on Everleigh. It works.”

“Wonderful!” Galton exclaimed. “How long until you will be here?”

“We have to stop at Gledi Space Station first,” Bristow said sneaking a peek at me. “There was an accident. Akacia was hurt. We need a hospital.”

Galton’s eyes about bugged out of his face.

Soraya gathered her composure and asked, “Tell us what happened.”

“On the planet, there was a storm. Akacia, being who she is, saved others, but couldn’t save herself.”

“What does that mean exactly?” Soraya asked, filling the awkward silence because Galton still looked like he was about to have a coronary.

“Briar is working on erecting a plan to put Project Infinity into effect.”

“Project Infinity…” Galton finally spoke. “That means…”

“We have her hooked up to machines that are keeping her alive until we can get to the space station.”

“What happened to her nanites?”

“We’re not sure,” Bristow answered. “Briar thinks something on the planet disabled them.”

“Can she restart them?”

“She doesn’t know. She’s been working non-stop to find an answer.”

“Can we see her?” Galton asked.

“Sure,” Bristow said and then turned the tablet to show Galton and Soraya Kaci’s prone and lifeless body.

“Oh my stars,” Soraya murmured.

“I knew she should have stayed here,” Galton said.

“Yes! You’re absolutely right! She should have!” I yelled. “Do you know what I would give if I could turn back time and leave her there? I know this is my fault. She came because of me! So, blame me all you want. I can’t feel any worse than I already do. But know that I will do everything I can to bring her back.”

“Everleigh?” my mom’s voice interrupted. “Take a deep breath. Galton is just upset. This is not your fault. She went with you because she loves you. She was worried about you. There was no telling her no. She would have found a way onto that ship. She’s a lot like her mother in that way.”

I felt like there was a curse hanging over me. Something bad has happened to everyone I’ve ever loved. “I love her, Mom.”

“I know, and that’s why you need to have faith that she’ll be okay. Try to find your inner balance and hold on to it. If there is anything Briar needs, have her contact us. We can try and help from here.”

“I’ll let her know. Once we’re at the space station, Bristow and Huxley will take the Gladiator and get to Valinor with the cure.
