Chapter Fourteen

Evie dozed fitfully, worried about the strange meeting with Sandy and about the fight with Luke. She kept staring at the Tiffany ring box on her bedside table, and eventually got up and put it in the medicine cabinet to get it out of her mind.

In the morning, Tater woke her up with his usual series of barks and licks, and she rolled wearily out of bed, having logged less than three hours of actual sleep.

“Are we walking this morning?” Jesse called from the kitchen, looking disgustingly well rested in her Nike shorts and pink tank.

“Since when do we ever walk in the morning?” Evie asked grumpily.

“Since today. Get Tater’s leash and put some clothes on. I need to log at least three miles. I want my thigh gap back.” Jesse put her legs together and looked for space in between them.

“Thigh gaps are gross. And there’s no way Tater would make three miles. His little legs would burn down to nubs by mile two.”

“Fine, one mile then. Chop-chop!”

Evie saluted and went to throw on some cutoff shorts and an old Wonder Woman tee—a far cry from Jesse’s put-together look, but she didn’t care. Her life was potentially in danger, and her love life was in the dumps. Her clothes matched her mood.

Half an hour later, they hit the track at the park and began their version of a power walk, which consisted of Jesse walking on her toes while sending a text and Evie playing catch-up after every stop Tater made to sniff leaves and piles of dog-doo.

“So what has you in such a shit mood?” Jesse asked after sending her last text.

“Oh, Luke and I had words last night.”

“Is that what the fancy people call a fight?”

Evie sighed. “I guess. He accused me of withholding information about the case.”

“Well, did you?”

“Technically I did, but it wasn’t on purpose. I just didn’t think some things were that important. He disagreed.”

“Well, did you apologize with some healthy consensual sex?”

“I should have. Instead I accused him of faking his feelings for me so I would spill information about Brad.”

“Ouch,” Jesse said gravely.

“Yep. I kinda screwed the pooch on that one.”

“All is not lost, my pet. Just apologize with a bustier and a blowjob. Men tend to get over these things faster than women do.”

“I hope you’re right. I really hurt his feelings, Jesse.”

“You really like this guy, huh?” Jesse stopped walking and looked at Evie curiously.

“I do.”

“Then go find him—now. Don’t leave him hanging.”

“He said he’d call me this morning,” Evie said piteously.

“And has he?”

“No.”

“You need to go find him. Like, now. Give me Tater,” Jesse ordered.

“I can’t go like this. I have to go home and change.”

“No time, no time. Find the man and beg for mercy. If he’s worth it, it doesn’t matter how much pride you have to swallow.”

“He’s worth it,” Evie said with conviction. Jesse nodded and reached for Tater, and Evie turned and began the long trek towards Luke’s apartment.

Forty-five minutes and two bus transfers
