EIGHTEEN

“I’ve got a location,” Acario announced to the room of his enforcers—the ones who had volunteered to go in exchange for Casey’s freedom. “I spoke to Vivian last night.”

“What about Casey?” Oliver demanded.

“I struck a deal with Vivian not to harm her any further.”

“The bitch will go back on her word.” This comment was from Hunter.

“No, she won’t,” Acario said firmly. “I’ve given her exactly what she wants. Besides, if she does, I get to inflict every hurt she’s given to Casey.”

“I don’t like it,” Pete said.

“That may be, but Vivian is holding all the cards here. We have to play by her rules for a little while longer,” said Acario.

“What does that mean, though?” said Hunter. “Will we be fighting against Vivian?”

“No,” Acario said, waiting for everyone’s questions to die down before saying, “We will fight for her.”

“We don’t even know who she wants us to fight,” somebody said.

“Yes, we do… Rhett.”

“Father?” Hunter asked, alarmed. “I thought we were allied with the Helheim pack.”

Acario turned his eyes to his son. “We were…until he lost your sister and put her in mortal danger.”

“You can’t seriously be considering this,” said Pete. The enforcer looked at Acario accusingly, and Acario didn’t appreciate it one bit. He let some of his power as alpha roll through the room. Everyone dropped their gazes, cowed by the invisible force.

“I’m sorry,” Pete said. “I meant no disrespect. I’m only trying to figure out what you’re trying to do.”

“I’m trying to keep Casey alive,” he replied sharply. “We have about a week before Vivian expects to see you at the address she’s given. Spend time with your families, tie up any loose ends and prepare yourselves. I have no idea how this is going to end.”

He dismissed his enforcers, but told his four sons to stay behind.

“How confident are you?” Hunter asked once everyone else had left the room. Acario couldn’t help but smile. He was just like him—direct.

“I have no doubt it’ll be a suicide mission.”

Dylan said, “So let’s figure out another way to get Casey back.”

“I already have,” Acario replied, sitting down behind his desk. “I want you to retrieve her.”

“Do you know where she is?” asked Riley, sitting forward in his seat. Acario’s youngest son had a look of his mother when he was serious as he was now.

Acario tapped the Post-it note on his desk where he had scrawled down the address Vivian had given him. “I think she’s here.”

All of them gave him a speculative look. “Do you think Vivian is that stupid?”

“Stupid? No. Over-confident? Definitely.”

“What if Casey isn’t there?”

“Then we follow her wolves until we find her,” Riley said.

“No. That’ll take too long,” said Hunter. “There has to be another way. We need to start scouting things out now.”

Acario smiled, glad his eldest had thought it through. “You’re right, Hunter. I want all of you to start doing surveillance on this address. I want regular reports and I’ll check in with you too. Understood?”

“Understood,” they all replied in unison.
