I’m eager to get to school the next morning. I wake up before my alarm—which never happens—shower, dress, eat, brush my teeth and shout bye to Mom before she leaves for work. She raises her eyebrows at my unusual hurry, but simply waves me out the door.

It’s cold out. I flick the hood of my hoodie over my head and turn away from the wind as I wait for the bus. Red and brown leaves fall from the trees that line the street and tumble along the sidewalk and into the ditch.

At school I scan the yard and the hallway looking for Belle Fehr’s blonde head and the blue-haired chick she’s always with. I’m tall so I can see over the heads of most of the people, but I don’t spot them, and disappointment rushes through me.

There’s a tug on my shoulder and quick as lightning the thought flashes that Belle has found me. I turn, but it’s not her.

“Hi, Wendy,” I say, forcing a smile.

She smiles back. “Hi, gorgeous.”

We walk side by side through the crowds, stopping at my locker first, then hers, but my eyes never stop searching.

Wendy wrinkles her forehead. “Are you okay?”

I reassure her by wrapping my arm around her shoulder like I always do, and try not to feel guilty that I’m searching for another girl the whole time we head down the hall.

I break away from Wendy before we enter the room. Mrs. Winger normally greets all the students as we walk in, but today she’s noticeably missing. Odd.

My eyes dart to the empty desks behind mine. I take my seat but can’t stop my eyes from checking the back door of the room waiting for Belle to enter. That guy they hang out with, Dylan, saunters in just as the bell rings, but she’s not with him.

I let out a frustrated sign when I realize Belle’s not coming. Then I have a worse thought: maybe she’s gone back to Neverland somehow. Maybe I’ve missed my chance to talk to her, to ask her all the questions burning in my gut. In a strange way I miss Neverland. Not that I want to go back, but I would like to hear about it again. Talk to someone who knows.

I want to know why she came. It kills me that I was too dense to figure out who she was before now.

Wendy pokes me. “Are you okay?”

I wish she’d stop asking me that. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Mrs. Winger still hasn’t shown up. I take the opportunity to look over my shoulder, in the opposite direction of Wendy. Dylan sees me staring and frowns. I point to the empty desks normally occupied by Belle and her cousin. He gets my meaning and shrugs.

I can’t tell if he doesn’t know, or thinks it isn’t my business.

The class grows quiet and I face the front. A man is standing at the board writing something.

He’s as tall as me with broad shoulders and a bald head. Something inside my gut twists.
