TOBY ASKED for a private session with Ira.

“I don't think that's a good idea,” I said, but Toby insisted.

Afterward, Ira asked for a private session with me.

When I came in alone and sat down, Ira looked at me regretfully. I got the distinct sense that he knew something bad.

“What is it?” I said. “What did Toby tell you?”

Ira smiled faintly and waggled his finger at me, as if I were a naughty child. “You know I can't tell you that.”

“Fine,” I said, crossing my arms and looking away.

“How old are you?” Ira said.

“I'm thirty-one,” I said warily, wondering where this was going.

“Hmm,” Ira mused. “Well, you have time, but not a lot.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, if this isn't going to work out between you and Toby, and if you want to have kids, we need to get you back out there so you can meet someone else. You're going to be thirty-five before you know it.”

I sat, stunned. “What the fuck are you talking about, Ira?” I snarled, instantly regretting swearing at my marriage counselor. Then I said quietly: “I'm here trying to save my marriage.”

“Yes,” Ira said. “Well, we may want to rethink that goal.”
