Chapter 21

“Shit.”

“What?”

I freeze with what I’m doing, hands still on my laptop as I’m in the middle of putting it into my bag to leave work for the night. “Um, I have to go home. I’m supposed to be going to my parents’ tomorrow morning. Fuck.” I slam my computer into the bag and put one hand on my hip, the other in my hair, and blow out a puff of air.

This thing with Chase is getting complex, but I can’t let it detract from my parents.

“Liz, what’s the problem?” His hands are on his hips and his face is scrunched. By his tone, he seems to think I’ve lost my mind.

“I thought you wanted me to come over tonight.”

“Is there a reason you can’t stay at my place and go see them in the morning?”

“We were going to leave right from here, so I don’t have my car.” After our date and the subsequent weekend, I’ve been spending most nights at Chase’s, and we carpool to work in the morning. Neither one of us are willing to call what we have a relationship, but more and more, that’s what it feels like.

Sighing, Chase closes the gap between us and loops his arm around my waist, pulling me against him. “I’ll go with you, Liz.”

My face snaps up to his as I try to pull back, but Chase tightens his grip on me so I can’t get away. “You what?”

“If it’s a choice between not seeing you and taking you to your parents tomorrow, then I’ll go with you.”

“But that’s, that’s like meeting them.” Is he really willing to meet them instead of spending a night without me? That seems ludicrous.

“We’re coworkers, are we not?”

“Yes.”

“Do coworkers not meet each other’s families?”

“Not usually, no.” None of my other coworkers have met my parents, including my bosses and secretary.

“Well, then consider it me taking you hostage, which I am for the weekend, but still allowing you to do what you planned. Unless you have objections?”

“It just seems like a big boyfriend and girlfriend thing to do. And we’re not that. Right?”

Chase’s jaw ticks as he stares down at me. But I challenge him, refusing to break eye contact as my hands slide up his chest.

“Does it have to be a label, Elizabeth? I like you, you like me, we have really fantastic sex. Do we need more than that? Am I not allowed to meet your parents without putting a label on it?”

“No. I guess not. It’s far, though.” A few hours.

“Fine. What time?”

“We should leave around eight. And it’s my mom’s birthday, which is why I’m going. I need to grab her flowers on the way.” And maybe a card, but it’s hard to know if those are good or not since she sometimes doesn’t remember who the giver is. Flowers are easier for her to accept.

“How hard are you going to be to wake up in the morning?” One eyebrow raises as he questions me.

“Not hard.”

“Liar.” Chase smiles down at me as he tucks some hair behind my ear.
