Chapter 11

Jonathan got out of his truck and sloshed through the rain and mud to the service hall of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church for the monthly Cattle Farmers’ Association meeting. A group of half a dozen farmers stood on the church porch, finishing their cigarettes and talking, before going in for the meeting. They all smiled and waved as Jonathan hurried out of the rain to the shelter of the porch and then into the service hall.

Two rows of tables were lined up for the twenty or so farmers who normally attended the monthly chapter meeting. In the back of the service hall was the kitchen, where a woman with short brown hair and smiling blue eyes hurried from the kitchen with a large aluminum tray of food in her hand.

Jonathan headed in her direction, lifting a hand in greeting to the other farmers inside. “How’s it going, Mary?” He reached for the large pan and she quickly handed it over.

Mary’s smile created small laugh lines around her eyes. She pointed to a table next to the kitchen that was topped with food. “Hey, Jonny, is it wet enough for you out there?”

“Not quite, I could take another inch or two.” He teased and set the tray where she indicated on the table.

“You would say that. I’d only welcome more rain if I were at home curled up on the couch with a book. Not here feeding you lot.” Her words were softened by the humor in her voice.

“You know we couldn’t make it through a meeting without you here yelling at us to keep our hands away from your banana pudding.” He searched the table for the bowl that he knew would contain her coveted desert.

“You can put your hands on my pudding.” Mary winked at him.

“Stop saying that or I just might steal a cup before the meeting.”

Mary playfully swatted his arm. “That’s the problem with you men. You’re intentionally obtuse.”

Ever since Saturday, there was only one woman whose pudding he could think of. He still couldn’t believe the compromise he’d put out there to Renee.

“I’m going to stay obtuse,” he said to Mary. “George showed me his gun collection the first day I visited his farm to discuss his conservation plan.”

Mary chuckled. “He won’t shoot you. Not when he’s trying to get you to run for president of the state chapter this year.”

Mary turned to walk away, but he stopped her with a hand to her elbow. “President?” He hadn’t thought any more about it since George mentioned it the other week.

Mary nodded. “That’s right. I heard George talking earlier about how it’s time for you to assume the role. A lot of the members think he’s absolutely right, too.”

Mary made her way to the kitchen and Jonathan turned to scan the room for George. He was a new member, but he was vocal. Combine that with the quiet push by other small farmers who were members and there may be enough people to actually support his nomination.
