Jade lay on Alice's bed, fighting hard to catch her breath. Alice sprawled on top of her, her head rising and falling with the movement of Jade's chest, her breath not steady either. They had just finished making love and were basking in the glow of a closeness Jade never knew she could feel.

Jade had always felt a strong connection with Alice, but adding the physical element to it took things to a whole other level. Alice looked at Jade with a single-minded focus and passion, shifting and adjusting each caress based on Jade's response. Jade felt seen, and wanted, like she'd never experienced.

Just when I thought I couldn't fall harder for Alice, she goes and makes love to me in a way I'll never forget.

Jade smiled to herself. If anyone had told her she'd be lying in bed with a woman she loved in Rose Lake of all places three months ago, she would have laughed in their face.

Jade placed a kiss on top of Alice's head. “I’m so glad I found you.”

Alice stiffened. “Me too.”

A chill ran up Jade's neck. She knew what that tone of voice meant. Alice was lying which made no sense.

A couple of weeks ago, Jade's grandmother had insisted on having Alice over for dinner. Everything had been going just fine, until Jade saw a flash of discomfort on Alice's face. When her grandmother asked how Alice liked the fish, Alice said she loved it, her voice squeaking. Later that night, Alice had confessed that she hated fish.

Jade's heartbeat raced as Alice grew rigid above her. Tension hung in the air as both women held their breaths, seemingly waiting for the other to speak up.

“Are you okay?” Jade asked

“Mmhmm. Why wouldn’t I be?”

Jade bit the inside of her cheek. The first time they’d made love, everything had gone perfectly. It was like they had both read some manual on exactly how to pleasure each other. That experience had bolstered Jade's confidence in the bedroom.

Just a few minutes ago, Jade had been confident that she’d satisfied Alice. What if she was wrong about that? What if Alice had been faking on the first night, hoping that things would get better, and here Jade had gone and ruined that hope?

“Was it...good?” Jade managed to croak out.

Alice lifted her head. “Was what good?”

Jade untangled herself and pulled the sheet up to her chest as she sat. Alice quickly followed suit and stared at Jade, her brows furrowed.

Unable to face that intense blue gaze, Jade looked down. “You know. The sex. Was it good?”

"Is that why you think I'm quiet?" Alice placed a finger under Jade's chin and coaxed her face toward her. "Of course it was good. The best I've ever had, and I'm not lying about that."

Jade searched Alice’s eyes. She held them for good ten seconds until she was satisfied.

"So what's going on with you? You were a little quiet at dinner, and you're quiet now. Is everything okay?"

Alice sighed. “I’m just thinking. I didn’t mean to ruin the mood.
