Chapter 5

Several days later, Addie arrived at Pete's home with a completely different flock of butterflies than had traveled with her on that first visit.

Since she and Pete had agreed to go out, they'd spoken on the phone at least once a day. Texted more frequently than that. They still hadn’t organized that first date, but they would. The more she got to know him, the more confident she was of that.

Pete was funny. And thoughtful, like when he'd sent her a cute puppy picture after he'd learned she had a quiz for her online class.

She liked him. A lot.

She smoothed down her T-shirt as she crossed the sidewalk. Which was silly, because she was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt over her bathing suit again.

He'd invited her to stay and eat after their time in his sister's pool. He'd offered to grill, explaining that this would not count as a date-date. She'd been able to imagine his easy, chagrined smile over the phone as he admitted that sometimes single parents had to compromise.

She didn't mind.

At her knock, Pete shouted from inside for her to come in. There was no sign of Tanner as she let herself in, and she remembered that Pete had said he'd be staying the night at his grandma's house.

Pete padded down the hallway, barefoot again, with a sheaf of papers in his hand. "Hey."

Seeing him so casual again made her belly do that same backflip as it had before.

"What's that?" he asked as he ushered her through the living room.

She looked down. She'd forgotten about the game.

"I brought some after-dinner entertainment." She held up the Settlers of Catan box for him to see. The game could take hours, which meant a long time to linger over conversation.

His eyes glinted.

"Uh-oh. You're not one of those uber-competitive guys, are you?"

His grin gave it away. He tipped his head toward her, eyes narrowing. "Maybe it's your competitive streak I need to worry about. You brought the game."

She laughed and left the game on the living room couch, padding into the kitchen behind him.

"You want a drink or something?" he asked.

"No thanks."

There were steaks marinating on the counter, full heads of corn still in the husk lying next to them, both ready to grill. A salad bowl and tongs had been set on the island, along with a pan of brownies covered in Saran-wrapped. She could smell the warm chocolate in the air. He'd gone all out.

And her butterflies were all aflutter again.

He'd done all this for her.

As if she mattered.

He was adding the papers he'd been carrying to a slim three-ring binder on the nook table.

"What's all that?"

He flipped the binder snaps closed. His neck was a little flushed. "I was gonna give it to you later."

What? "A present? For me?"

"It's not really—"

"Can I have it now?"

He shrugged, color for sure now seeping up into his face. "Sure. It'll keep me out of the pool longer."

She shoved his shoulder playfully, nudging him aside so she could see. Their hips brushed, and his hand met her waist so she'd keep her balance.
