I enter Roshan’s room to tell her the good news. I spoke with Amma just a few moments ago, and she was glad for the income her sale will bring. While we are losing our best girl, we are making more money off her sale than we ever would with her living at The Mansion. Amma couldn’t be happier.

“Darius, hi!” She sits at her small dressing table, applying cream to her skin.

I cross my arms over my chest, trying not to smile even though I’m happy for her. “I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me I’m being bought. Darius, I’m shaking, here. Shaking! Abdyl told me last night that our time had come. Has it? Has it come?”

“Yes.”

She screams, jumping into my arms. “I’m really going to be free? Truly free?”

I nod my head. “Say your good-byes, Roshan. You leave today.” I place her back down on the floor.

Something passes over her face before she bites her lip self-consciously. “Today? But that’s not long enough. I need to prepare.” She scurries around the room, lifting perfume bottles from her nightstand before placing them back down, muttering words to herself that I cannot hear. Tears well up in her eyes.

I watch her for a few more minutes before asking, “Hey, what’s wrong?”

She turns to me. “Darius, I have been here, in this home, for three years. Before this, I was living with my parents and five siblings in a clapboard house in Dharavi. Freedom? What does that even mean?” She laughs, but it’s clear she doesn’t think anything about the situation is funny.

“It means, being able to come and go as you please. It means, deciding how you want to live. Your body and your mind are your own, and no one else can control you. When you want to leave your house, you can leave. When you want to return, you can return.”

“He told me last night that he was getting an apartment for me on the Upper East Side of New York City. How will I survive there, Darius?”

“You will survive in the same way you always have. With your head held high. You are not only beautiful, but you are smart, too. You speak English, so you will have no trouble communicating. I trust you will figure out the rest.”

“Have you been there? To New York City?”

I shake my head. “I’ve been to London. And Paris. They are gorgeous cities. New York will be just as beautiful. And America is different—in a good way. At any age, if you want to be, say, a doctor, you can apply for school, and if you get in, you follow your dream. No one shuts the door on you. Rich can become poor. Poor can become rich. It’s a kind of … mobility. True freedom.”

She looks at me, her eyes glassy. “You are more than this life, you know? I think—”

Amma walks into the room, and Roshan immediately quiets.

“I trust that Darius told you the good news.” She lifts a brow.

“Yes, he has, Madam.
