Chapter Fifteen

She couldn’t believe what he’d done.

Hannah was still upset with Ethan for stepping in and bidding on the chandelier.

They now sat quietly in Birdie’s room as Ethan visited with his aunt. They’d previously planned to stop by on their way back to the island. And though she was upset with Ethan, she wouldn’t deprive Birdie of seeing her great-nephew just because Hannah was anxious to put some distance between herself and Ethan.

As Birdie and Ethan discussed Peaches, Hannah sat quietly by. She tried to figure out why his action had upset her so much. Some women would be over-the-top excited to have a handsome man make an extravagant purchase on their behalf.

But the thing was Ethan hadn’t even talked to her about bidding on the chandelier before he’d done it. He took it upon himself to decide what would make her happy, just like her ex used to do.

Brad had decided in what manner she should spend her money. He said the beach house would make her happy. He’d decided they should marry immediately. It would make her happy. He’d decided they should start a family right away. She’d love being a mother. And through it all, he hadn’t discussed it with her.

Just like her father had decided many years ago that being a firefighter wasn’t for her. He didn’t discuss it with her. He’d just said that there were a lot of other things she could do with her time.

She didn’t need another man in her life to decide things for her. But what was done was done, and she was pretty certain Ethan couldn’t use a big, beautiful chandelier. And so now she had to figure out how to come up with enough money to pay him back.

As it was, she’d bid on one other thing. It was something that only one other person wanted. It was an old mirror that had been cracked. The gold paint on the frame was worn and chipped. In other words, it was a mess. But she could see the beauty in it. And when the bidding started so low, she just couldn’t resist bidding on it. She got it for less than a hundred dollars. Not too shabby.

If only the chandelier had been that cheap, she wouldn’t be worrying about how to pay Ethan back. She’d had to scale back her baking orders in order to make room for planning the Spring Fling, but at this point most of it was now planned. Maybe it was time to put word out that she was open for more orders—a lot more orders. That chandelier was far from cheap.

Chime. Chime.

Everyone grew quiet at the sound of a cell phone going off. Aunt Birdie sent Ethan a disapproving look.

“It wasn’t me,” he said.

“It’s me. Sorry.” Hannah reached into her purse and withdrew her phone. “I’ll mute it.” When she glanced at the screen, her mouth gaped.

Ethan grew concerned. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Hannah smiled. “Awe… My niece’s goat just had a baby. Nikki sent a picture.
