Chapter

Twenty-Three

Cielo

“Cielo? Are you okay?”

Through the tears streaming down my cheeks, I saw that Mitch looked concerned. Actually, it looked like he was bordering on panicked as he stared down at me on the floor. Fighting to stifle my giggles, I finally managed to rise to my knees and nod.

“I am, I promise,” I choked out, fighting back another wave of laughter as I peered up at him. “Honest, Mitch, I’m fine.” I wiped my eyes on my t-shirt and grinned. “I’m sorry. It’s just a really, really funny though.”

“Okay.” Mitch’s brow had deep furrows and his jaw was tense as he offered me a hand and easily pulled me to my feet.

I thought for a minute. “Okay, did you know that all I was allowed to eat was rice, oatmeal, and a small portion of fish once a week?” I could tell from the flaring of Mitch’s nostrils that he didn’t. “Don’t worry about that,” I said quickly. “I’m trying to make a point.”

Mitch nodded and dropped heavily to the edge of the bed.

“Okay. At the time, I didn’t miss other foods because I didn’t know they were an option, you know? So, while I didn’t enjoy what I was eating, I did it because I had to. Servicing Master was the same thing. He isn’t attractive, doesn’t smell very good, and the job was unpleasant, but I still had to do it.”

Mitch’s face was still pinched, but he seemed a tiny bit more relaxed than he had, so I continued. “So, all of that aside, I’d never voluntarily give up cheeseburgers just because someone made me eat only fish, rice, and oatmeal in the past.”

“I think I get it,” Mitch said slowly. “So, it would be pretty funny if someone suggested that you’d enjoyed the crappy food you had to eat to survive.”

“Exactly,” I agreed, relieved when the wrinkles creasing his face had started disappearing. “It wouldn’t have even occurred to me that people like to do that.” I felt my cheeks heating up. “Until I saw that movie, anyway. Now, uh, I think maybe I see how it might be nice if it was with someone I liked, you know?”

Mitch gave a muffled groan. “And that brings us to the next topic. It’s, ah, perfectly natural to have those feelings and even to touch yourself when you feel the, ah, urge. I do think you need to talk to Jeremy before you do anything like that with another person, though, even if it's someone that you like, okay? There are things you need to know to protect yourself and I’m really not qualified to explain it to you, okay?”

I couldn’t hold back a frown. Jeremy was nice and all, but Mitch was the one I trusted on a weirdly deep level. Still, the last thing I wanted to do was make him more uncomfortable, so I nodded. “Okay.”

“Good.” Mitch drew in a deep breath and I could see he was struggling to find words and then I remembered what I’d said outside that had upset him.
