Chapter Twelve

Bonnie took a quiche lorraine out of the fridge and cut two wedges from it, wrapped them in foil, and put them in the oven to reheat.

Sabotaging her own business? As she had already said to Taryn, the notion was ridiculous. She hadn’t aggressively promoted the café on social media, but was she actively sabotaging her business?

No, of course not.

She was busy—no one could deny that her days and evenings were full. She had the occasional time off, like her Sundays, but even those were often spent caring for the animals or shopping for supplies.

When did Taryn expect her to work on this grand marketing plan? From two to three in the morning? While she was stirring muffin batter?

Well, she had managed to get the brochure done while eating a sandwich in the café, before the lunch crowds arrived. Between her own photos and Jerome’s, she now had a huge selection on her laptop. She had known exactly what she wanted to say because the lecture she often gave about choosing a new pet was always clear in her mind after so many years of delivering it to potential adopters.

It had taken maybe half an hour to combine the pictures and text into a cohesive package and then email the file to an office supply store on South Hill, requesting expedited printing. Another fifteen minutes to pick up the finished product while running other errands. No one could argue that her life wasn’t hectic at times and always full, but she’d have a hard time convincing even herself that she couldn’t find a spare forty-five minutes in a day.

She glanced over and saw Taryn still reading through the damned brochure. She peered over the edge of it every few seconds, though, so Bonnie didn’t think she was actually absorbing the material. More likely, she was giving Bonnie time to mull over what she had said. Or waiting for her to explode in anger and kick Taryn out of the house for prying into her life.

The latter did tempt her, only because it would let Bonnie off the hook and she could continue on her way, remaining in denial over the accuracy of Taryn’s statements.

But Bonnie didn’t want her to go. She enjoyed Taryn’s company, for one thing, as brief as their acquaintance was destined to be. For another, she felt an edge of truth to what Taryn had told her. She didn’t think anyone else in her life would have been as blunt about it.

Jerome had scolded her about not having a website, but he seemed to assume that she had quit developing one because she didn’t know how. Nancy’s main concerns would be that Bonnie stayed in business, no matter how slim her profit margins, and that she continued to be a pushover when Nancy had another cat to add to her menagerie. Viv would give Taryn a run for her money in candor, but her focus was on Bonnie’s love life and not the café’s solvency. And
