Chapter 9

“A nesting portal,” Rune repeated. “It’s a colloquial name for a much more powerful form of portal than what you’re used to, your majesty.”

“Okay…” I said. “I’m still confused.”

“A nesting portal is a portal inside a portal,” Rune chuckled. “It will cut down our travel time significantly.”

“Well, that’s good,” I said.

“This kind of portal requires a great deal of energy, your majesty,” Rune said. “That’s why Birch, Sunny, and Matis are here.”

I glanced over at the green, yellow, and pink hair of my valets, and the way their dragonfly-wings glistened in the sunlight.

“Watch the triplets, your majesty,” Rune said with a bemused grin. “A nesting portal explains itself much easier than I can.”

I arched an eyebrow at my golden-haired advisor, but I turned to where my bright-haired valets were. They were standing in a half-circle around the front of the mirror we used for portals. Birch stood on the left side of the mirror with his left hand on the glass, and his right hand in Sunny’s. The yellow-haired brother stood in the middle and held both of his triplet’s hands. Matis stood on the right, and his right hand touched the smooth surface of the glass.

They’d made a sort of circuit between themselves and the mirror, but I still didn’t know what was about to happen, or why it required all three of my valets.

Despite my confusion, I continued to watch the triplet faes as the mirror’s reflective glass began to waver and change. After a long moment, the image in the mirror became clear once more, except it didn’t reflect back the faces of my valets.

The mirror was filled with a series of images within one another, like when two mirrors sat opposite each other and reflected back and forth an infinite number of times.

Except each layer within the reflection was a completely different place.

I saw a forest, what looked like a dimly-lit back alley, a grassy field, and even a layer that was consumed by white. My best guess for that layer was a snowy landscape, but I couldn’t be sure.

“Wow,” I breathed as I gazed at the incredible sight.

My triplet valets sighed with satisfaction, and they dropped their hands as they stepped away from the mirror. They looked rather pleased with themselves and utterly exhausted.

“That was amazing, guys,” I praised, and I patted Birch on the shoulder.

“Thank you, your majesty,” the green-haired fae said in a breathy voice that sounded like he’d just run a marathon.

“So… why didn’t Lord Trent use this kind of portal when we invited him to the mansion last month?” I asked.

We’d called the sea nymph to the mansion to gain information, but all we’d discovered was that he was fully locked in Rhaiden’s control. He’d taken a series of portals that had taken hours to journey through.

“It requires a familial connection to create a nesting portal, your majesty,” Rune explained. “You need at least three fae with a strong blood connection to do it. The more faes, the less energy each one has to contribute.
