I spent a few hours hitting the last four parks, forcing myself through the increasing nausea and vertigo of detecting the essences in each. The snake-like feel and taste was present in all of them, to varying degrees. Nowhere was the strength of the essence as high as the first park, and the location of the sixth abduction was so faint I almost didnât pick it up at all. That seemed to indicate that the child taken there was perhaps a victim of opportunity instead of planning.
Sitting in my car, luxuriating in the seat warmers, I called Karenâs number. Surprisingly, she picked up on the third ring. âJack Dahlish, how did you know I was thinking about you?â
âIâve been told that itâs hard not to think about me. Like a vinegary old wine that was aged a little too long and lingers on the tongue for hours after a meal.â
âHmm, I was thinking it was more like a decadent piece of rich chocolate that leaves you wanting more after youâve eaten it all.â I could hear the smile in her voice.
âWant to meet for lunch? I just hit the last abduction site, and I could use some sustenance before I spend a few hours doing research in the library.â
There was muffled talking, and I could tell she had put her hand over the phone to speak with someone else nearby. âOne thirty, at Luigiâs. Itâs a wonderful little hole-in-the-wall Italian place south of 410.â
âYou got it,â I said. Checking the time and thinking about traffic, I knew I could be there several minutes early. âIâll get us a nice table.â
The map on my phone directed me to the restaurant, in a tiny space at the end of an old block of stores. The lunch crowd was already clearing out, so I was able to get a cozy booth in a dark corner. It was far from the kitchen and the station where the two servers would stand between table visits, giving us a nice bit of privacy.
I was sipping the glass of water the waiter had delivered when Karen entered. It was as if the sun had chosen that moment to shine through the heavy clouds. When the door opened, a shaft of light entered the dim restaurant and highlighted the reporter in all of her vermillion glory. She spotted me and hurried over to kiss me on the cheek and slide into the booth on the other side of the table.
âI hope you werenât waiting long. My news director was ranting and raving about that poor girl being found so soon. I think heâd be happy to let his own kids stay missing for a couple of days if it meant a few extra ratings points.â
âSounds like a jerk, but I canât say much since I felt a little disappointed myself.â
Karen reached out and placed her hand on top of mine. âI know, it was our best lead! Letâs hope we arenât still searching for this monster before another kid is taken, though.
