Chapter Thirty-One

Duncan

Raile had called us and told us he made contact with Alisa and she was fine, but it wasn’t until she got out of the car and I pulled her close that I believed it. My heart was pounding when she rested her head against my chest, thumping so hard she could probably hear it.

“What the hell did you do?” I demanded.

She let out a shaky breath that I thought was a laugh, then I realized she wasn’t laughing. I immediately regretting swearing at her.

“We’ve got to get her to safety, and we’ve got to get back to the library,” Azrael said. “I don’t understand how she would have…”

“Teleported?” Tiron suggested helpfully.

“Fae don’t teleport.” Azrael frowned at Alisa as if she’d broken a rule.

She held out her hands and shrugged. “I’ll try not to do it anymore, believe me. If that’s even what happened.”

“Why don’t you talk to Duncan,” Raile suggested. “While we start to plan our departure.”

Then he headed off toward the guys. I stared at him, perplexed.

Alisa cleared her throat. “’I’ve got something to tell you.”

“What did you do now?”

“It might be something you did.”

I frowned down at her.

“I’m pregnant,” she said, then pulled a face, as if she wasn’t sure how I’d take that.

“With a baby?” I asked, knowing how stupid I sounded but unable to stop myself.

“With a dinosaur, I’m hoping,” she said, cupping her hands over her flat stomach. “Or maybe a dolphin? I love dolphins. A crocodile? I figured you’d hope for a crocodile.”

“Alisa.”

“Duncan.” She mimicked my stern tone perfectly.

“How?” I asked.

“Well, sometimes when a Fae asshole and a magical wonderful Fae queen love each other very much, he puts his—”

“You know what I mean! This is not ideal timing!”

She stared up at me, then frowned. “You didn’t say this is not ideal timing when we had sex in the woods. Or when we—”

“It was fine timing for sex. It wasn’t fine timing for a baby. We’re in the middle of a war!”

“I didn’t plan this!” she exploded. “Can’t you be happy?”

“I don’t know!” I genuinely didn’t. I was stunned.

“You’re,” she poked me in the chest emphatically to punctuate each word, “Going. To. Be. Happy.”

I caught her poking finger in my fist. “I love you—“

She cut me off before I could add my but. “That’s it. That’s all you need to say.”

I couldn’t help it then anymore anyway. I captured her mouth with mine, kissing her hard. I felt her smile against my lips, then the smile fell away as her arms twined around my neck, the kiss deepening.

Something deep and primal stirred within me. This amazing, winsome warrior who was fearless and wild was mine, and she was having my baby.

I wanted to keep kissing her all night. I wanted to pin her up against the car and see about making a baby all over again.

But reluctantly, I pulled myself away. “You should tell the others.”

“Other husbands,” she said lightly. “That will never stop sounding crazy.”

“It doesn’t sound too crazy,” I said.
