Chapter Eighteen

A Little Snag

Soon after leaving the tower, my wings begin emitting trails of golden light that hang in the air for a few seconds after I pass. At first, it seems Poendraz sensed my self-comparison to faeries and wanted to make the illusion more complete, but the ground is going by way faster than it should be, closer to the speed at which Vixana flew.

Guess she decided to throw me a small bone and give me the ability to fly faster. I don’t feel any different, so it’s more likely she altered this world to enhance my flight rather than changed me.

Time is precious, I’m not about to complain.

But what to do? Okay, so I’ve discovered the nature of the dimensional ‘invasion’ is not an invasion at all. That should be enough for ‘atonement.’ Trying to convince Baxxus that his creator wants to talk to him, though might be rough. Say something like that to the average person on the street; they’ll laugh—or run in the opposite direction.

Bigger question is the Cibalor. How do I approach a violent, warlike race of dragons and talk them into sending their leader to speak with Poendraz? Good question. Suppose it’s ‘play it by ear’ time.

Thanks to Baxxus giving me a memory map, I’ve got an idea where to go to meet the Cibalor. Two things are in my favor: size and teleportation. If it turns out that they’re super dangerous, I can hide in a place they can’t fit in… or go poof. It’s unlike Poendraz is going to hold it against me if the Cibalor won’t even talk to me. She’s not asking me to die for her cause. Then again, she did seem kind of ambivalent to the Drajjan, so who knows?

After orienting myself toward the Cibalor region, I accelerate and fly at whatever my new top speed is. The place is roughly 1,200 miles away from the Lumarae floating city, but I’ve already gone some distance northwest to reach the Vale of Torment—really, that place needs a different name. Anyway, mysterious knowledge tells me the Cibalor territory is only about 700 more miles away.

Worry dogs me for the next hour and a half or so. All this racing around is burning up time. I force myself to not think about it now.

Vast oceans of grey silt give way to craggy terrain with canyons and valleys nestled between black stone ridges. Large swaths of rock glitter from thousands of diamond-like crystals catching the mysterious light in this place, not from any sun. I spot a few packs of those weird ‘land squid’ creatures congregating by streams, as well as other, smaller animals reminiscent of iguanas or some such medium-sized lizard.

Fast motion high and to my left draws my attention to a pair of brick-red colored dragons. They appear to be on the smaller side, closer to the version of Talos that goes to my world when I shapeshift, only they have longer snouts. The pair have already seen me and are racing closer.
