Chapter Six

I skidded tires as I turned into the precinct. I three minutes to be in his office. Melvin Hass was the worst, and he hated me for some reason. If I wasn’t in his office by the time he said to be, there would be consequences. I wished I could just teleport to him. When suddenly, the world fell away, and I was standing outside his office.

What the hell? I wondered as I pushed his door open. Maybe Burvis had something to do with it, or maybe it was an ability from Ra. Pushing the thought aside, I noted the two strangers in the office. A small woman, with curly black hair, that was pulled back with a bow almost the size of a diner plate. She was dressed neatly in a pair of classic blue jeans, a pale-yellow shirt, and a cardigan the same shade of pink as her bow; so were the motorcycle boots she was wearing, bright pink with at least a five-inch heel. Her skin was pale and gray, and her eyes were yellow, menacing and wise at the same time. That could only mean she was a troll. I had only encountered a troll once before, and it had taken a team of fifty officers to take it down.

Whatever they needed my help with just even more serious, if a troll couldn’t handle it, then what the hell was I supposed to do? I took in who I was assuming was her partner. His hair was such a pale red, it was practically blond. His eyes were also pale, the blue so diluted it look looked like chunks of glacier ice. His gaze was about as cold as them as well as we both assessed each other. His frame was thin and limbs looked long. And when he smiled at me I blanched. His mouth was full of needle-like teeth. He screamed danger even though he looked spindly and weak. He tucked his pale hair behind his ear, the whole time smiling at me. I couldn’t tell if he was being friendly or if he was hungry.

“Captain Benton, glad of you to come. And on time I am surprised. Please have a seat.”

I swung my eyes towards Melvin and forced a smile. The only seat left was next to needle mouth, and I really didn’t want to sit next to him. I flicked my gaze back to the man, and he smiled again, wider, as if he could hear my thoughts. Steeling myself, I sat, crossing my legs to get comfortable.

“This is Ember Evershadow, and her consultant Delwyn Morozov. They need our help with a case Earthside. I told them that our captain was available and eager to help.” Melvin said, his whiny voice grating on my nerves already.

“Hi thanks for the meeting.”

Ember said as she stretched her short arm out for a handshake. It would have been rude not to shake her hand, but in order to do so, I would have to stretch in front of Delwyn.
