OLD MAN Jones had never spoken so many words in my presence as he did that day in the Copperhead. To say his voice was hypnotizing would be an understatement. Even though he was kind of an ass, his tone and cadence kept my attention. I wanted him to continue his story about the illegal moonshine still he had stumbled upon, but once the band took the stage, he left. I almost didn’t see him place a ten-dollar bill on the bar and disappear. If the door hadn’t creaked, I would have missed it.

At the end of the night, after Dexter and Mason helped Nikki and the band pack up their gear, they joined Brooke and me at the bar.

Claude sat patiently sniffing the air beside Oliver’s bed; he surprised me by not growling once the entire time.

“So, who’s your next interviewee?”

“Mason is going with me to talk with Ida Montgomery tomorrow. At the town hall, she mentioned how someone had completely wiped out her vegetable garden. Thought we would check it out. Could be something or nothing.”

“Her place is pretty far from where they found Annie. Think she’s a witness to something sinister?”

“A little dramatic, don’t you think?” Dexter teased and took another pull on his beer.

I rolled my eyes and turned away from my friends. No one had ever accused me of being dull. Music lolled from the jukebox; Adam sat beside it, with his back to the wall, eyes closed. At least he was nice enough to bus his own table. The extension of the Copperhead was dark, and I had a flashback to sitting at the bar with my daddy and his friends. Just like them, we tended to congregate near the taps.

“Do you think Wayne and Ray had something to do with Annie’s death? With Jackson’s disappearance?”

Shocked at the sound of Brooke’s voice, I gasped and almost tipped over my beer. We all had different ideas running through our minds as we nursed our drinks.

“Well, she was dating Ray. Kinda.”

“What?” Turned sideways on her stool, Brooke gaped at Adam. “She was?”

“Where have you been, Brooke?” Adam stumbled across the room and stood beside Dexter. He studied Brooke’s face and chuckled.

I must admit, it was a little funny; I didn’t see her jaw drop very often.

“She wasn’t only dating Jackson. She used Ray as a blocker from her daddy.”

“How did I not know this?”

Lifting his shoulders, he set his glass on the bar for a refill and waited. He slid two dollars across the bar and climbed onto a stool.

“Is this true?” Brooke’s gaze bounced from Mason, who also shrugged, to Dexter.

“News to me, too.”

“Come on, Brooke.” I tilted my head. “She was only seventeen. Did you really think she and Jackson were in love?”
