CHAPTER SEVEN

WILLIAM

This wasn’t the first time the Darkness had come under attack. At least a couple of times each year, we either had to fortify the protective wards or face off against an aggressive Soul attack. It was fitting that our most common enemy was our own kind. We were a threat to their very existence.

Over the next few days, I spent all of my time making sure we were prepared for the next move. Our wards had been strengthened for now, but that wouldn’t last forever. I needed to be sure that the army was ready for battle. Grace continued to train with them, spending nearly all her time fighting and building her strength. When she wasn’t doing that, she was spending time with Kathryn. I tried not to think too much about how little time she was spending with me. It helped that I was distracted by other things.

The Werewolves that protected our mountain border were having issues with their food supply. For over two decades, they had been securing the mountains from outside influence- all the way from our enemies to humans that just wandered too close, enticed by the mountains. The threat of a wolf pack was usually enough to scare them back to humanity. In exchange, we provided them a safe place to live, plus a pact to support them against any threats they faced.

Unfortunately, the magic that shrouded the Darkness to keep enemies away also deterred animals from migrating into the area. The Weres desperately needed deer and other animals as a source of food. They were coming before the council to request our assistance in finding a way to increase their food supply.

After reaching an agreement to switch the protective charms being used in that part of the Darkness, I walked outside with the head of the Werewolf pack, Carter Donovan.

“Thank you for meeting with me today,” Carter said. “I know you have your own issues to worry about right now.”

“It is always an honor to work with you.” Something in my blood started to tingle and I turned my head involuntarily. A chain of soldiers ran in unison through the open field. In the middle, standing just as strong and confident as the Vampires, was Grace. Only her blue eyes betrayed that she didn’t belong.

Grace spotted me and smiled, offering a tiny wave. I took some satisfaction seeing that she was happy to see me.

“Who’s the human? She’s beautiful.” Carter had also been watching Grace, but now he turned to me. Seeing the look on my face, he grinned. “So the rumors are true? William Blackwood has fallen in love with a human.”

“What? No.” I frowned. “Grace is my companion and that is all.”

“Sure, man. If you say so.” Carter slapped me on the back. “You’ll let me know if you need any help with the latest attack?”

“I will be in touch.” I was still frowning after he had gone. Were my feelings for Grace really that obvious?

“Liam!” Kathryn had broken away from the group and was headed in my direction.
