Chapter 8

Ana decided that letting Mike go home alone at night wasn’t a good idea. She’d be responsible for a missing American in the city. Her friends were getting ready to leave and it was late.

“I’ll take you home, Mike,” she said, and felt several pairs of eyes stare at her.

Mike rose from the couch and set down his glass. “You don’t have to do that. I can find my way home.”

Ana grabbed her jacket from the coat rack. “I would feel terrible if you ended up in Bratislava. Besides, it’s raining. You’ll get confused.”

He walked toward her and grabbed the jacket she held out for him. Her friends put on theirs as they exchanged looks.

“I’m really starting to feel like a kid or dog who can’t find his way home. I’ll be fine,” Mike said.

Everyone made their way to the door.

“Danke Ana,” Thomas, then Georg and Daniela said.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Nina whispered to Ana as she planted a kiss on her cheek. “Be careful.”

“Good night, Mike,” Daniela said from the front of the group and they all turned to wave at him.

“Nice meeting all of you,” he replied.

Ana grabbed her keys from the hook by the door and turned off the lights. Mike walked out first, then she followed. Her friends were already one flight of stairs down.

“You said yourself that it’s raining. I don’t want you getting wet,” Mike said and turned to look at her.

The sudden move brought him face to face with her. She looked up at him startled. “I stopped listening five minutes ago. Don’t argue with me,” she said, unable to stop staring at his mouth right before her eyes. She gulped and raised her gaze to his.

He considered her in silence for far longer than was proper. She was sure he was going to kiss her. Her heart was racing and she licked her lips.

“Let’s go then,” he said and stepped back.

She decided not to dwell on the disappointed feeling that shot through her for a split second.

Outside, the raindrops came down hard and she ran as fast as her ballet flats allowed her to. Within minutes, she was soaked to the bone, despite Mike’s notepad she was holding over her head. He had insisted she use it since neither of them had an umbrella. She’d been so distracted leaving her place, she forgot to bring one along.

Mike was keeping up with her, and one look over her shoulder confirmed that he was just as wet.

“This way,” she said, turning a corner. His footsteps receded and she realized he hadn’t seen her turn. She hurried back and grabbed his hand. “This way,” she yelled over the thunder.

They took a shortcut, but even so, it would take several minutes to reach his place. His notepad felt like mush and didn’t provide much coverage. Only when they stopped in front of his door did she realize that his hand was still in her grasp. She released it and held out the notebook.

“Sorry it’s ruined,” she said with a grimace.
