The next morning, Takeshi gathered his things and went down to breakfast.

Freja looked overjoyed to see him up and about and greeted him warmly. “Good mornin’! You look much better today! Are you feelin’ better?”

He nodded. “Much better, thank you. Some time to rest was really all I needed.” He sat at one of the small tables as she brought him a sliced bread roll filled with scrambled eggs and bacon and a cup of juice.

“Are you still wantin’ to check out today?” she asked, adding kindly, “You could stay a few days longer, if you wanted.”

“Thank you, but I need to be moving on,” he replied. “Should I give you my key now?”

She shook her head. “No, you can give it to me after breakfast. Where are you off to in such a rush?”

Takeshi considered her for a moment. “Alenci. I’m interested in the Warcross Wall and was hoping to do some research on the subject. Alenci seemed like a good starting point.”

“The Wall?” she asked, looking surprised. “What about the Wall is so interestin’?”

He shrugged. “My interest is purely academic. How was the Wall built? What is it made out of? Things like that.”

She frowned. “Be careful, Mr. Tanaka, if you’ll take an old lady’s word on the subject. Nothin’ good comes from the Wall. It kills everythin’ for miles around. They say they built the Wall to keep out the plague, but most people think they were tryin’ to keep somethin’ worse out. Those who see it say there’s somethin’ wrong with the way it’s built, say it feels uncomfortable to look at.”

Takeshi felt his eyebrows rise. “Is that so? What were they trying to keep out? Is there anything else you know?”

She paused. “Not specifically, no. Just… they don’t like it too much when people go sniffin’ about the Wall. Be careful up there, you hear?”

He inclined his head gratefully, sensing that she wasn’t likely to talk more about it. It clearly made her uncomfortable. “I will be. Thank you.” He watched her walk away as he chewed on both his food and the information. So there was something special about the Wall, something that “they” didn’t want people to know about. Intriguing. If he assumed “they” were the government or the military, then he might actually be heading in the right direction.

Cheered at the thought, he finished breakfast quickly. He thanked Freja again as he turned in his key and said his goodbyes before stepping out into an absolute downpour. Instantly soaked, he hurried through the city to the train station, glad his bag was made of a waterproof material.

The train station was full of people, though many looked like they were hiding inside waiting for the rain to ease up a bit. Takeshi navigated his way through the noisy crowd, looking for ticket sales. The terminals for buying tickets were all interactive screens with card readers for payment, and while there were a lot of people around, several of them were available. He slid
