According to federal law, the police are expected to file a missing child’s information with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) no longer than two hours after receiving a missing child report. Because of the chaos created by the storm, this process was delayed by several hours. Because it was still suspected that it was the storm itself that had caused Indigo’s disappearance, an AMBER Alert was not issued even after her data was in the NCIC database.

The flood hadn’t produced as much water as Theo thought it had. While she and Delaney had been struggling to get inside the store, it felt like it was rising so high that it would cover her head if she wasn’t able to get on the other side of the door fast enough. Even six inches of rushing water was strong enough to knock a person off their feet, and it only took twenty-four inches to carry away a car. This is exactly what happened to Glory’s RAV4, which was located about four miles from where Theo and Delaney abandoned it. The SUV was found three days after the storm hit. Even though the media had been notified about Indigo’s disappearance, and a search had been conducted over the accessible areas of Whisper Creek, the child still had not been found.

Jordan let out a long, low whistle when he and Theo saw the mangled SUV.

“It’s not salvageable,” she told Delaney on the phone. “It looks like I rolled it two or three times on the highway. No,” she corrected herself, “not on the highway. It looks like it fell down a cliff into a field of rocks.”

“That might be generous,” Jordan said.

“I’ve got more good news,” Delaney announced. “The Stanley’s basement flooded. Most of my important stuff, like my diplomas and pictures and legal papers were packed in boxes and up on closet shelves, but everything on the floor and at least two feet high is pretty much toast.”

“Oh, Delaney,” Theo lamented. “That sucks. I can’t believe this …”

“Well, I’m looking at it right now, and I can assure you, it’s all very real.”

“What’s going on?” Jordan asked.

“Delaney’s apartment flooded,” she informed him.

“Damn.”

“Move in with me,” Theo told Delaney. “Take Glory’s room. You’ll have your own bathroom, and it’s nice and dry.”

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“That’s a stupid question. Of course I’m sure.”

“Fine. I’m in no position to argue. Thanks.”

The inside of the barn might have been dry, but the weather had still not settled. Theo thought about that cornflower blue sky and the cumulonimbus cloud the tourist outside of the Madeleine had marveled over several days before. She looked up at the sky now and all she saw was wet, gray cotton.

“We can be there in ten minutes,” Jordan said. “Between the three of us, we can have my truck loaded and over to the barn in less than an hour.”

“Did you hear that?” Theo asked Delaney.

“Got it,” she said. “I’ll be here when you show up.”

Jordan and Theo climbed back into his truck.
