Jim Martin lay on his back half-buried in snow. Gunfire echoed in the distance. He sat up, drew out his pistol, cocked it, and returned it to his holster. This was no time for pacifism.

He buried his parachute in snow and moved south. A valley stretched to his right, and he veered downhill. Then a thought struck him like a thunderbolt: his yellow Mae West highlighted his chest like a target. Martin stripped it off and hid it under the nearest log. Pleased with himself, he sat down and lit a cigarette. Smoke eddied upward.

A voice called. Was it English? A response came. Martin followed the snow-dampened sounds. Before long, he joined Wesley Chester, Ken Wheeler, and Charlie Charlesworth. They decided to proceed farther southward, the most likely direction to find their crewmates.

At nightfall they hid under the snow-weighted branches of a fir tree, rested their backs against the trunk, and shared Charlesworth’s salvaged parachute for warmth. Their escape kits offered a few chocolate bars for sustenance.

Black enveloped them. Unless their footprints betrayed them, they were safe for now.9
