A SHORT time later, they were hiking down a mountain pass into an alpine forest. They soon encountered a path, and followed it through the trees.

"You're sure this is Earth?" asked Dirk.

"Pretty sure," said Lorilee. She breathed in deeply. "Though the air's so clean up here it's hard to tell."

"I keep expecting a monster to leap out from behind a boulder. Or maybe an angry fairy or a blond bombshell."

She laughed. Thrassis smiled. Nasty looked around uneasily.

A young couple bearing backpacks approached, gawking at them. Human! Lorilee felt like dancing a jig.

Lorilee smiled and touched the bow slung over her shoulder self-consciously as the couple steered a wide berth around them.

"Hunting is illegal here, you know," the young bearded man called back to them. "FYI."

Lorilee nodded and waved.

"They must wonder what you'd be hunting with swords," Dirk snickered.

"I don't care how weird we look," said Lorilee. "I'm not giving up my sword or my bow. They're so cool."

"Man, you are one righteous chick. I wish I could find one like you my age."

"Good luck with that," said Nastypho. "But I doubt there is another like her in all the Divided Worlds." Then a cloud seemed to pass over his face. "Except one."

After another hour, a parking lot came into view. A forest ranger appeared around a bend ahead and marched sternly up to them. He took in the bows and the huge swords with an expression of utter disbelief.

"Do you have a permit for these weapons?"

"Yes, Officer," Thrassis assured him. Lorilee felt the power of his command voice resonate through her. "And we have shown them to you. You are satisfied."

The forest ranger nodded agreeably.

"Where are we?" Lorilee asked.

"You mean the trail we're on?"

"No, the actual place."

"Upper Yosemite Falls, Yosemite National Park."

"What time is it?"

"Eleven A.M."

The ranger started to walk away.

"Stop," Thrassis commanded him. "You will give us a ride."

The ranger halted in mid-step and turned back to them. "Of course. Where would you like to go?"

Thrassis turned to Lorilee, who was giving him a mild scowl.

"I don't like making people act against their will," she muttered under her breath.

"I understand, Lorilee," Thrassis replied, matching her whisper, "but we wouldn't get very far without commanding someone."

Lorilee sighed. "I live in Sumervale. We'd need to go north on Highway Five."

Thrassis conveyed that to the forest ranger in his command voice.

They followed him down to a Jeep Cherokee.

"How far to your town?" Thrassis asked.

"About four hours," said Dirk. "We should be there by late-afternoon."
