Raviel sank into the arms of her bonded. Daeson’s quiet words of promise filled her soul with contentment, for she could not deny the fear that lingered in her heart. She knew she needed to be strong for Daeson, even if it meant denying her own apprehensions. She held on tightly to him, not yet daring to look into his eyes. As bonded, they often could discern a need of the other before they themselves knew the need. He would know if she faltered in her courageous act. He might already suspect her fears, and perhaps it is why he spoke those words. Whatever his thoughts, she needed to hear his words of promise.

Rationally, Raviel knew that she had only been trapped in space for just a few hours while traveling at near-light speed, and she had been unconscious for most of that. But somewhere in the recesses of her mind, it felt like she had lived three hundred years in isolation. She couldn’t explain it. Daeson had been without her for months, but she had been without him for centuries…alone and adrift. The quantum anomaly that Avidan had described had changed her, and she didn’t dare tell Daeson. There were moments when she felt like she was slipping away again. Was it real or was it the lingering shadows of psychological pain? She couldn’t tell, nor could she describe it. She just knew that something was broken inside her and might never be fixed.

She donned a countenance of strength once more and pulled back from Daeson. He reached for her cheek. His eyes were different now…stronger.

“You’re an amazing woman, Raviel Starlore.”

She stood and lifted him up with her. She rested her head on his chest. “You just keep telling yourself that,” she said with a smile.

After leaving Daeson, Raviel searched out Tig and found him talking with Kyrah.

“Am I interrupting?” Raviel asked.

“Nope,” Kyrah said, flashing a quick smile her way. “Just discussing training requirements for forcetech. I’m meeting the chief, so I’ll catch you two later.”

Raviel watched as Kyrah disappeared through a corridor hatch. “Is she upset?” Raviel asked.

“Yep,” Tig said. “But she’s an officer and she’ll be okay. She can’t get over not protecting Avidan.”

Tig looked over at Raviel. “How’s he doing?” Tig asked.

Raviel wagged her head. “He’ll be fine. He just needs some time to accept it.” She looked over at Tig. “You ready for another adventure?”

Tig laughed. “Let’s just hope this one turns out better than the last. I don’t think there would be any restraining Daeson if something goes wrong this time.”

Raviel nodded. “I’m afraid you’re right. Let’s get to planning, shall we?”

Tig held out his arm, pointing down the hall to the mission planning room.

“Lead the way.”
