CHAPTER 18

THE REST OF the drive to D.C. was eerily peaceful, but I remained vigilant, always glancing at the rearview mirror and eying any roads that joined the one we were on. At any moment I expected a semi full of Inferni to come at us like a bat out of hell, but that never happened.

That didn’t settle my nerves any. I knew we were walking into the belly of the beast, and I knew there was a very real possibility that this could go to shit. I wasn’t worried about myself, but I couldn’t stomach the thought of something happening to the girls.

No, I thought, I won’t let anything happen. I’ll fix this. I’ll save them all.

Jutting my chin out defiantly, I cleared my throat.

“So, what should we expect at the Inferni Enclave?” I asked.

“Well, I can’t be entirely sure, but I’ll tell you what I know,” Ariel said as she sat up in the back seat. She raked her hair out of her face, then folded her arms over her chest, her expression hardening. “And it’s not pretty.”

“Of course.” I sighed. What else could I expect from a post-apocalyptic world where angels and demons were at war?

“There used to be a Guardian Enclave in D.C. as well,” Ariel began, her wings tensing behind her like it pained her to tell the story. “It was there first, but the Inferni wanted the entire territory for themselves. That Enclave is abandoned now.”

“It’s not unusual for Inferni to get territorial and take whatever they please,” Micah said from the passenger seat. I’d thought she’d been sleeping, but she opened her eyes to look at me. “They’re greedy like that.”

“This was different.” Ariel shook her head. “More brutal.”

“How?” I asked, gripping the steering wheel tighter.

“They came during the night, for what was supposed to be a simple raid, but from what I heard, their leader had other ideas.”

“He wanted them gone.”

“Yes. He was confident that he could take over their Enclave and expand the Inferni’s territory.”

“How do you even know this?” Micah asked.

“That Enclave we passed through wasn’t quite so hostile when I visited in the past,” Ariel said. “And humans love to gossip.”

“So, what happened next?” I asked, eager to hear the rest of the story.

“Half of the Inferni were against it, because they feared their human charges would rebel when they heard of the Inferni’s hunger for more—more power, more land, more resources,” Ariel said. “But after some squabbling amongst themselves, they did as their leader wished.”

“And they won.” My voice sounded hollow, distant. Like someone else said the words.

“They did.”

“And the people of the Guardian Enclave feared them, right?” Micah twisted in her seat to better see Ariel. “Did they fight back?”

“No.” The word hit me like a ton of bricks. “The humans switched sides. They lost faith in the Guardians and believed that the Inferni could better protect them. They thought the Inferni could win the war. So, the Inferni took over the Enclave without much fuss from the humans.
