— DAY TWO —

As Luke 11 opens, Jesus has just finished praying.

He may have been praying silently, His lips moving in fervent supplication. Or He might have been praying out loud, calling on His Father and praising His name. Scripture doesn’t tell us how Jesus was praying, but it is apparent that His disciples saw or heard something that touched them or intrigued them. As soon as Jesus concluded His prayer, one of His disciples approached Him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray.…”

His response to their request is recorded for time and eternity because it would never change. Down through the centuries, it has remained the same. From age to age. From culture to culture. From nation to nation.

“When you pray, say:

‘Father, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

‘Give us each day our daily bread.

‘And forgive us our sins,

For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

(Luke 11:2–4)
