Chapter 18

Kailey tightened her parachute harness and nodded to Malinda. The pilot's voice came over their headphones. “One minute.”

They stood and moved to the back of the plane as the hatch was opening. They had to hold the sides to keep from being sucked out before it was time.

The voice came again. “Three, two, one, go!”

They both fell forward into the nothingness. It was almost too dark to see each other. They only had a faint light on their wrists to see their altimeter.

They were free-falling using their arms to guide them to their destination. When the time was right, they both pulled their lines releasing the chutes.

Kailey was jerked as her chute opened. She turned immediately to see where Malinda was. There was no other chute. She should have been right next to her. Then she saw the faint light plummeting toward the earth. Her chute hadn’t opened.

Kailey released the chute and fell again, guiding herself toward Malinda. She hoped she could catch her before it was too late for both of them.

She was gaining on her fast. Malinda was still using her arms and suit to slow her while she tried to release her chute. Finally, Kailey slammed into her and wrapped her legs around Malinda’s waist. She reached behind Malinda and started pulling her primer chute out hand over hand.

The earth was coming up fast—too fast. The chute finally jerked out of her hand as the air caught it. Malinda wrapped her arms around Kailey and held her tight so as not to lose her when the jerk came.

Fifteen seconds later, they hit the ground hard.

They both lay still for what seemed like minutes but were only seconds. Malinda was the first to move. She rolled over to check on Kailey who was lying on her back not moving.

Malinda scooted to her and laid her ear on Kailey’s chest. She wasn’t breathing but she did have a heartbeat. Malinda slapped Kailey’s cheek then blew into her mouth. Kailey coughed and started to breathe.

Malinda rolled back over onto her back.

A minute later, Kailey whispered, “You okay?”

“I think so. I’ll find out when we try to get up. How about you?”

“Couldn’t be better. I had a good nap.”

“Shall we?”

Malinda rolled to her hands and knees and slowly pushed herself up. Her fifty-two years were catching up with her.

“Need help?” she asked Kailey.

“We’ll see,” she said as she sat up. “If an old lady like you can do it, I guess I can.”

She turned over and pushed herself up too.

“I made it,” she grunted, feeling her thirty-three years.

Malinda hugged her. “That was some aerobatics you pulled off up there. I owe you my life.”

“I have a bad feeling you’ll get a chance to pay me back before we get out of here. Do you know where we are?”

Malinda looked at her GPS. “Shit, we’re three miles from our rendezvous. We’re two miles north of Gorodnya. We landed on the wrong side of Volga River. We’re going to have to cross it.
