Chapter 11

“What is this I hear about you and the mayor getting into it on Second Street?”

Jynx rolled her eyes and took a deep breath before turning around and facing Mrs. Crowder, her teacher from grade school.

“Mrs. Crowder,” she replied, forcing a polite smile on her face.

The woman hadn’t aged since she had been there. It wasn’t fair, her flawless complexion and her eagle-sharp eyes didn’t appear to have lessened any either.

Okay, so her red hair had a few more streaks of gray in it, but she had been blessed with good genes for certain. They were the same height now, so she wasn’t looking up at the woman.

“Ginny Nix. So, you remember me, wonderful. I wasn’t positive, as you haven’t come say hi to me since you got back in town. Now, I’m wondering why one of my best students is arguing with the mayor in public?”

Would you like a ruler to smack me? “We had a disagreement. It’s not like we’ve been the best of friends.”

“That’s true. The two of you were more like nemeses than anything. However, you are no longer in grade school.”

“I’m aware of that, yes ma’am. How did you know?”

This time, she laughed. “One, we’re a small town and two, I had breakfast with some of the Trapper Lakes Knitting Circle, I made a delicious bacon, cheese, and mushroom quiche, you should come by and had some. Anyway, as we were eating, they told me as we were talking about how to boost up Ms. Veronice’s attitude since we are burying Mr. Clotchey this afternoon.” She gave a sad smile. “She was his girlfriend, you know.”

How did everyone know this and why didn’t Veronice tell me when we were talking? “So I’m hearing.”

“We approved but there were some who didn’t. Anyway, I just wanted to remind you that you aren’t supposed to fight with Ms. Charlotte like that.”

“Yes ma’am, thank you for the reminder.” She turned back and headed off before any more reprimands could fall in her direction. Hurrying through her morning errands, she dropped a few things off at work for tomorrow and hastened back home.

After her shower, she stood in her room staring at her reflection in the full-length mirror. A knock on the door startled her and she glanced over to find her father there.

“Could you help me tie this? I can’t get it right.” Her father wore a black suit with a gray vest along with his crisp white shirt. In his hand, he offered her a gray striped tie.

“Of course.” Taking it from him, she turned up his collar and lay the silk along his neck. “I remember when mom would do this for you.”

“Me too,” he whispered.

She took her focus from tying the knot to look at his eyes. They shone with unshed tears. This was the first funeral they’d been to since her mother had died.

Aware her father never liked ties overly tight, she left it a bit loose, but not enough to appear sloppy. Then she fixed his collar and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
