Berthe Morisot

The Cradle

1872

Morisot’s most famous painting shows one of her sisters, Edma, gazing pensively at her young daughter, Blanche. It’s a tender portrait, cleverly composed – look at the diagonal line connecting Edma’s gaze and arm with her baby’s arm, held to her head in a similar position. There’s a subtle sense of melancholy in the way Edma rests her chin in her palm and fiddles twitchily with one of the translucent drapes enclosing the cradle. What Morisot is getting at is the complicated mix of emotions a new mother might contend with.
