STEROIDS

Another commonly used class of drugs in veterinary medicine is steroids. Steroids perfectly embody the metaphor of the double-edged sword. They are the best and the worst drugs in the world, all at the same time. Steroids are, unquestionably, the best anti-inflammatory drugs known to medical science, and there are times when their use saves lives. The best way to think about steroids is that they can be great for short-term use to treat severe medical conditions. Things become a lot murkier when they are continued for the longer term, such as months or years. Long-term side effects of steroids include immune suppression, muscle loss, and negative impacts on the liver, and they can lead to diabetes in cats. While there are circumstances where longer-term steroids may be necessary, such as with severe autoimmune disease, they must be used with caution, and every effort should be taken to wean patients off these medications at the earliest opportunity. Steroids should never be used long term for noncritical conditions such as allergies.

When used appropriately, allopathic medicine is highly beneficial and promotes longevity. The problem, of course, is Western medicine tends to overuse these methods because they are the only tools in the toolbox. As with everything in life, balance is the key to success, and the most advantageous way to utilize allopathic medicine to promote longevity is by balancing its use with natural supplements.
