THE SENILE GENIUS

His mind is dead and words, like so many worms, incorporate it.

He speaks what invokes a dark career; chance, faith, a delusion; a blind trek needs but one step to frustrate its end.

His is a fulsome imagination doffed in wild confusion — twilight,

and thriceward is night.

Put him in the bin,

and woolly pigs be his allegorical calling.

Ceased cherished conveyance of good and cheer, all’s wretched languor to attend.

My God but he’s not that augean!

Scarcely a word uttered and wham! he finds himself up against some creep of a quaestor who’d have it water wash water.

Put him in the bin; his outbursts are become nothing but prestigious flukes.

What good his snake oils

his connubial remedies; he’s nothing apothecary.

Yet he’s satisfied.

If the world should stop

and a vast death strike, he’d fold his life like a dollar, exact with care; life be pure gain,

and death no loss.

Something there is is not elsewhere but here;

the flagon’s in a fell hand,

and the mighty altongue’s regardant.

Put him in the bin, foolish to defend that brain; swear some nascency there, he’s finished! done for!

No more.
