5 Brownington

Brownington’s well preserved but little-visited Old Stone House Museum (802-754-2022; www.oldstonehousemuseum.org; 109 Old Stone House Rd; adult/child $10/5; 11am-5pm Wed-Sun mid-May–mid-Oct) is just one of many lovely 19th-century buildings reposing under the shade of equally ancient maple trees. The museum pays tribute to educational trailblazer Alexander Twilight, the USA’s first African American college graduate, who built Brownington’s boarding school and ran it for decades.

The Drive » Take VT 58 west, I-91 south and VT 16 south to Glover (13 miles), then turn left onto VT 122 and look for the Bread & Puppet Museum on your left within less than 1 mile.

TRIP HIGHLIGHT

6 Glover

A bright-turquoise school bus parked across from a barn with painted letters proclaiming ‘Cheap Art Store’ is your sign that you’ve stumbled upon the Bread & Puppet Museum (802-525-3031; www.breadandpuppet.org/museum; 753 Heights Rd; donations welcome; 10am-6pm Jun-Oct, self-serve access only Nov-May). For nearly 50 years, the internationally renowned Bread & Puppet Theater has been staging politically charged, avant-garde satirical spectacles starring gigantic papier-mâché puppets (some up to 20ft tall) borne through the fields on the company’s hilltop farm. Vermont performances take place on weekends in July through August.

When no show is going on (the troupe tours nationally and internationally outside summer), visit the museum in the cavernous old barn and admire freakishly impressive angels, devils, horses and other fantastic creatures from past performances, hauntingly crammed over two stories. Oh, and about that name? The troupe bakes bread and shares it with the audience at each performance to create a sense of community.
