Rīga’s central train station (Centrālā stacija; %6723 2135; www.pv.lv; Stacijas laukums 2) is convenient to Old and Central Rīga plus public transport. It’s housed within a modern shopping mall with a good supermarket, just outside Old Town.

The information office (open 7am to 7pm), to the far right facing the ticket windows, is very helpful. Use www.1188.lv and the national railways’ site (www.ldz.lv) for schedule and fare info.

International trains head from Rīga to Moscow (16 hours), St Petersburg (15 hours) and Minsk (nine hours) daily.

Rīga has six suburban lines. Of most use to travellers is the Dubulti–Sloka–Ķemeri–Tukums Line, which runs through the entire length of Jūrmala, and the Sigulda–Cēsis–Valmiera Line, which can take you into the heart of Gauja National Park. The Skulte line is convenient for Saulkrasti.
