Worth a Trip
If you can tear yourself away from the immediate area, Florida offers two incredible nearby regions that are more than worth a day trip. First, the Everglades constitute the state’s most compelling wilderness space. Much more than a swamp, the ‘Glades are actually a seasonally flooded plain teeming with incredible biodiversity, ranging from birdlife to alligators to the rare Florida panther.
Another region worth exploring is the Florida Keys, a teal-and-emerald necklace of coral-and-mangrove islands suspended in Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Of some 1700 Keys, 43 are attached to the mainland by the Overseas Hwy – but you can also come here via ferry from Fort Myers Beach.
