06 Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site

Sitting on a quiet country road outside of Dresden, the fascinating Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site (uncletomscabin.org) honors Father Josiah Henson, the inspiration behind the title character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s famous novel. An escapee enslaved person, Henson found freedom here with his wife and four children in 1830. Visit their modest clapboard house and learn about the family’s day-to-day life as well as Henson’s work on the Underground Railroad, leading 118 people to freedom through a network of secret routes and safe houses. As you explore the site, you’ll also come across a historic sawmill, smokehouse and church, all belonging to the Dawn Settlement, a black Canadian community that Henson founded in 1841. End your visit at the Josiah Henson Interpretive Centre, which has loads of multimedia exhibits and artifacts related to Henson, the history of enslaved people in the US and their search for freedom in Canada.
