There, I’ve said it.

Covering his hand with hers, she assured him, “I’m not trying to put any kind pressure on you.”

He snorted, “You couldn’t if you tried. Abby, look at me.” He waited until their eyes met. “I’m nowhere near where you want me to be, but I do care for you. Don’t ever doubt that. I mean,” he grabbed her ass, “I’m fucking you, aren’t I? Never thought that was gonna happen again in my lifetime.”

Okaaay, wow. That was unexpected. He could be obstinate as hell, but his simple honesty had brought her to her knees, hands waving in the air in a big hallelujah.

There was no denying the new developments in their relationship. Regardless of how Loki would put it, their dinner out last night closely resembled a date. Their conversation, at the bar and in bed, was deep and personal. She would’ve never imagined confiding in Loki had she not felt close to him. On a certain level, it was freeing that he knew what her ultimate goals were. If they included him, then he wouldn’t be caught unawares. If they didn’t, then he’d understand if she walked away from him. Either way, acknowledging their deepening bond was a relief because she wasn’t in stasis, going nowhere. Since the last two years of her mother’s illness, which were the worst, the feeling of forging onward in her life was super important. She didn’t need to be pregnant, but she did need the sense of moving forward, of progress.

After relaying the story of her mother and father, she was struck with the realization that she’d fallen for Loki as hard as her parents had fallen for each other on that hot summer day at the concert. She recalled her mother’s description of not being able to look away from her father, of drifting toward him as if they were connected by an invisible steel cable that reeled her in like a fish hooked on a line.

Abby’s fingers ghosted along the hard planes of his chest, encircling his tightening nipples. The soft bristle of his dark hair stood out against his tanned, olive skin. Her palm glided down to ring his burgeoning shaft. The rise and fall of his chest accelerated as his features tightened. His face would never be splashed on a Calvin Klein ad with his jagged scar, heavy brow, and angular jawline. A smile broke over his face, and the shifting of the muscles of his cheeks lit the azure of his eyes. It made him one of the most gorgeous men she’d laid her eyes on. Abby hid her face in his chest.

Oh, God. There was no denying it. He was the one for her.

He wasn’t ready, but she would throw caution to the wind and place a bet on this rugged, bristly, sexy male. His emotional depth and caring surpassed any other man she’d ever met, including her father and brothers. The tragedies and hardships he’d survived had forged a deep well in him. The deepest.
