When we finally located them, Alicia’s vest was off and cast aside, her face twisted in pain. On their advance through the college, she’d taken a .38 to the torso. The vest stopped the bullet killing her, but Eli says it’s cracked a rib for sure. She’s okay, but she’s been sore as hell these past few days. Cracked ribs are a royal bummer, I’ve had a couple in my time from falls or fights. There’s nothing you can do except be careful, strap them up, and wait them out. Every breath is agony, never mind trying any form of activity. God help you if you need to sneeze. It’s like getting hit in the torso with a sledgehammer.

Dean gave us the quick lowdown on the situation. Makeshift barricades made from metal cupboards and heavy wooden tables were erected at the end of the corridor in front of the library door. Without any clear thought or good sense, I unhooked one of the two flashbangs attached to Dean’s heavy tactical vest and stepped brazenly out as I wrenched the pin and launched the grenade like I was hurling a cricket ball back from the boundary.

I was lucky the amateurs weren’t really prepared or expecting someone to be so bloody stupid. Luck is clearly one of my things, because I should be dead. Anyone with any kind of sense would have fired—not gaped—at the woman with no raised weapon stepping into the corridor.

They didn’t fire though, and I stepped back round the corner, ramming my fingers in my ears. The moment it detonated, my rifle was up, and I just started walking and firing.

Nate joined me seconds later and between the two of us, we put them all down. Unsighted, unhearing, and utterly defenceless, it was just too damn easy. I drew my Glock as we tore the barricade open, putting a round in the head of every one of them, whether dead or dying. I didn’t want any rising undead getting in the way of my vengeance.

I was ready to breach like an enraged lunatic when Momma baited me with Isaac’s demise through the door, but once again Nate stopped me, taking calm control. He switched it round, baiting them with a twitch of the door. On edge, the armed thugs blasted everything they had while we waited either side of the door, then Nate tossed Dean’s second flashbang through a splintered hole, disabling any further defence.

Alicia remained outside, struggling as she was, but the four of us breached like avenging angels and gunned the last eight Nomad defenders down, ensuring all of them were headshot to prevent reanimation.

Momma was on her knees, overwhelmed by the flashbang and subsequent violence of action as the four of us stormed into the room and blasted her defenders to meat.

You don’t see many obese people six months into an apocalypse. So far, I’ve only known five chubby apocalypse folk and Momma was all five of them. She was the stereotype for every “Yo Momma” joke ever conceived.
