Chapter Fifteen - Dreich

The amount of work we accomplished in the end was negligible. Most of the day was already gone and while we were tied up at the police station, waiting to make a statement about the abduction, the Cryptonites had apparently dropped another bombshell: they had somehow come up with photographic evidence of the monster. Rebekah was furious enough to chew up iron railings and spit out nails, especially when we were all denied a glimpse of what one cryptid hunter described as ‘the most convincing photographic evidence he had ever see.’

It was a grey day, sullen and heavy but cold. Occasional sprinkles of icy rain added to the general discontent. By 4.00pm Steve and Rebekah were constantly bickering, I had a headache, and we were no closer to making a breakthrough.

“We should split up,” I said abruptly.

The other two broke off from their current argument and scowled at me.

“All we’re doing is getting in each other’s way,” I pointed out. “Bex, you can’t really do anything else until Tom is free to go over those files with you. And I can’t speak for Steve but if he feels as rough as I do after last night-slash-early-this-morning slash finding out we’re under suspicion for murder...” I shoved a strand of hair back. “None of us are playing our best game.”

“Much as I hate to admit defeat, you’re right,” Rebekah said. “A break then. We’ll reconvene at seven for dinner.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I said.

Steve nodded, some of the tension leaving his shoulders. The opening bars of a maudlin love ballad filled the air and Steve sheepishly patted down the pockets of his coat until he located his phone. He glanced at Rebekah and me shiftily. “I need to answer this.”

He turned and walked away, phone held to his ear.

I felt a pinch of irritation and told myself not to be so daft. “That’ll be Kelsi.”

“What makes you think so?” Rebekah said, sounding amused.

I gave her a dry smile. “Can you think of anyone else he’d answer the phone for that quickly?”

“Interesting choice of ringtone,” Rebekah said. “I’m going to walk back to the car, give Tom a bell and see if he’s almost finished for the day. Want to come?”

“Nah.” I did not want to play gooseberry as Tom made cow eyes at Rebekah. T was going to get uncomfortable. She was oblivious to his deepening feelings because, for her, the sex was merely a pleasant diversion while she worked on a knotty mystery. “I think I’ll go for a walk. Clear my head.”

Rebekah’s finely arched brows drew together. “Do try not to have a repeat of last night, won’t you? Stick to well populated areas.”

I threw a messy salute. “Sir, yes, sir.”

A smile tugged at my lips as we parted ways. Rebekah sounded like she was being bossy, but she only did that if she thought you were worth bothering with. Strange as it seemed to an outsider, Rebekah cared about me. She didn’t even like most people.
