CHAPTER 17

Cassie’s heart lurched at the possibility of Oliver pulling his handcuffs from his belt. If he did that, she would not be able to protect Eve from anything that came next.

Oliver’s jaw rippled as he turned away from both of them. He stared at an empty wall for a moment, then turned back to face them.

“No. I can’t arrest you. Yet.” Oliver picked up the plastic bag containing the note and held it up in front of Eve. “But I have this, Eve. It’s not enough just yet, but I’m close, and I’m going to get to the truth. This is your chance to come clean, and perhaps receive some leniency because of your honesty. This is your only chance. Once you walk out of here, there’s nothing I can do to help you.”

Eve shook her head.

Cassie ran her hand along Eve’s back and stared at Oliver. She recalled how she felt when he had questioned her when she was a murder suspect.

“She has nothing to confess, Ollie. You know that. Eve’s right. You’re wasting your time, when you should be out there looking for the real murderer.”

Oliver narrowed his eyes, then walked over to the door. He pulled it open, then stepped aside and looked at Eve.

“You’re free to go. For now.”

As Cassie walked after Eve through the door, Oliver stepped close to Cassie and lowered his voice.

“Please try and make sure that she doesn’t run.” He met her eyes. “She’s definitely a flight risk. I don’t have quite enough to hold her, but if she runs this will be so much worse for her.”

“I get it, Ollie.”

“We’re on the same side. Right?” Oliver held her gaze. “We just want the murderer caught.”

“Yes.” Cassie nodded. “We’re on the same side.”

Oliver frowned. His lips tightened as he looked toward Eve.

“Ollie, you can trust me.” Cassie patted his arm, then continued down the hall to Eve’s side.

“What did he say to you?” A higher pitch entered Eve’s voice as she walked with Cassie down the hall. “Did he threaten you?”

“No, Eve. Not at all. He would never do that.” Cassie led her outside of the police station.

“Cassie, I have to get out of here. I’m going to call a taxi to take me to the airport.” Eve pulled her phone out of her purse.

“No, Eve, don’t do that.” Cassie took the phone from her hand. “Listen to me. You are innocent, I know that. If you run, you’ll make this so much worse. If you take off, it’s going to be very hard to prove your innocence. Do you really want to be running for the rest of your life?”

“What am I supposed to do?” Tears filled Eve’s eyes as she looked around desperately. “Just wait to be arrested for something that I didn’t do?”

“No.” Cassie slung her arm around her shoulders and steered her toward the road that would lead them back toward the house. “I’m going to find the real killer, Eve.”

“How?” Eve pulled away from her. “No offense, Cassie, but you’re just one person.
