OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE PROBLEMS AND DEPRESSION
There is a sadly high overlap between obsessive-compulsive problems and depression; up to 80 percent of patients with obsessive-compulsive problems are also depressed. Most of them are at least mildly depressed; some are seriously depressed. Why this is so, we donât yet know for sure. In chapter 1, we discuss the similarities and differences between anxiety and depression. Professor Barlow believes that they are two different ways of responding to stress in vulnerable people and that whether you become anxious or depressed depends on how vulnerable you are, how severe your stress is and what kind of coping skills you typically use.
It is quite possible that obsessive-compulsive problems cause depression because, as we explained above, the sufferer cannot even regain the limited control over her problem that is possible over some other anxiety problems, if at some cost. This is likely to cause feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, both common components of depression. Such feelings will be reinforced if the sufferer has been given ineffective and inappropriate treatment, as we often find. It is also possible that, in at least some cases, depression first triggers intrusive thoughts that then become obsessional in vulnerable people.
