LOSE WEIGHTâFOREVERâWITHOUT DIETING
CHAPTER 12
QUICK! IN the next ten seconds, name all the diets you have ever heard about. Remember the Scarsdale Diet? The Los Angeles Diet? The banana diet? Ever heard of the vinegar diet (a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with every meal), or the low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet? How about the citrus diet? The rotation diet? Chances are youâve tried a few of these yourself.

Here are a few revealing statistics: More than 80 million Americans are overweightâthat means one out of three. They carry a total of 2.3 billion pounds of excess body fat. Estimates say that nearly 65 million people attempt to diet at least once during each year. Americans spend about 40 billion dollars annually to burn or sweat off pounds, reshape their bodies, or diet.
Donât think weight is just a problem for adults. New studies say that at least one in five children in the United States are obese. Lack of physical activity is an important contributor, and the weight problem appears to be getting worse.
You may be one of those trying to lose that excess body fat. If you have taken part in more than one program, you should know firsthand that diet failure isnât totally a lack of willpower. Instead, you may have put too much effort into the wrong methods. Do the following statements sound familiar to you?
âI have to monitor every calorie if Iâm going to keep off those thirty-five pounds.â Rigid calorie restriction is not necessary. Itâs not an enjoyable lifestyle because itâs based on self-deprivation.
âIf only I were a little more self-disciplined, Iâd get the pounds off and keep them off.â You do not have a weak character, and weight loss is not just a matter of discipline. No one can stay on a rigid diet indefinitely anyway. Only about 5 percent of those who diet manage to keep the weight off permanently. When diet is combined with behavior modification, that figure rises to 10 percentâbut thatâs still low.
From past experience, you probably already know you canât maintain any diet that keeps you hungry. One of your most powerful instincts is to avoid starvation. The only diet you or anyone else can sustain is one that promotes weight loss and good health and that allows you to eat until you are full.
You formed bad eating habits over a lifetime, not just during the time it took to put on that extra 10 or 20 pounds. Your weight came on slowly, and youâll be more successful if you take it off slowly. The mind adjusts to weight loss much more slowly than the body does. While you may lose some weight fairly quickly, it takes time to adjust your mental image of your protruding stomach. I once heard someone say, âThe fat leaves the body, but it takes longer for the fat to leave the head.â
If you expect to find a magic method that will leave you thin for life, one that requires no effort and no self-discipline, you will fail.
