CHAPTER 28

While Simone calmed Susie down, I called my sister and explained what had happened. Phoebe admitted to feeling the same way in the rookie days of her career as a reporter. She agreed to stop by Susie’s place later to offer some words of encouragement. Looking at Susie now, I realized we’d both played a part in Maxine’s death. And while we’d accepted our share of the blame, we weren’t the ones who had taken Maxine’s life.

Maxine was dead because someone murdered her.

If anyone was to blame, it was him.

After Susie left, I checked in on Heidi Ellis. I detected a great deal of stress in her voice when she answered the call. Harper’s father was there, getting in the way of things, barking orders, and disagreeing with her at every turn. They’d spent most of the day making plans for Harper’s funeral. It hadn’t gone well.

Ginger was also there, and Alex had picked a fight with her too. It seemed he’d been making waves with everyone, so I decided I’d throw myself into the mix. Now seemed like the perfect time to question him about Frida’s death.

Ginger was sitting on the front porch when I arrived, her knees pulled up, head between them. Polly was sitting beside her, brushing her Barbie’s hair and staring at her aunt like she wished she knew how to make her feel better.

Polly smiled at me and said, “Hi, Gigi.”

“Hi, Polly. How are you doing today?”

“I’m okay.” She pointed at the pink plastic bag I held in my hand. “What’s in there? Can I see?”

I handed the bag to her. “You can. It’s for you.”

Polly peered into the bag and then jumped up, wrapping her arms around my waist. “Thanks! I’m going to go show my mom.”

Polly scurried inside the house, yelling her mother’s name, and I took her place beside Ginger. “Today’s going that well, eh?”

She leaned back and looked at me, the dark circles around her eyes indicating she was worn down and needed rest. “Is it over yet?”

I laughed. “It’s been that kind of day for me too.”

“What was in the bag you gave Polly?”

“A tutu and a leotard for the future ballerina.”

“No wonder she was so excited. You seem good with kids.”

“I have a niece a few years older than Polly, so I’ve had practice,” I said. “Do you have any kids of your own?”

She shook her head. “I’ve never been with anyone I wanted to have kids with, but as I get older, I’ve thought about it. Not sure what kind of mother I’d be.”

“The way Polly was keeping an eye on you just now, it’s obvious how much she cares about you.”

“I feel so bad for the little tyke, you know? She’s dealing with a lot right now, and then today she’s had to watch all the adults around her behave like idiotic children.”

“I’m sure it’s hard to act like an adult with Alex around,” I said. “I hear he’s making things difficult.”

She huffed a hearty sigh. “From the moment he got here, he’s tried to take over.
