CHAPTER 17

The afternoon after Louise and I got back from Atlanta, PJ called me and asked if I could come to the hospital. Detective Jones wanted to sit down with both me and Jewel.

“Why do I need to speak to him again? I’ve told him every single thing I know about Dennis, which is basically nothing. Not to mention, I think we all know that Jewel didn’t murder him.”

“I know, Miles. But if he thinks speaking to you and Jewel is going to help him solve this case, then you need to make yourself available. I know you have nothing to hide. But humor him. Come talk to him,” PJ pleaded.

“Alright, fine. When?” I asked.

“Right now works.”

“Right now?”

“We’ll meet you there in thirty minutes,” PJ announced before abruptly hanging up.

Once I got to the hospital, I made my way to Jewel’s room, where she and Detective Jones were already waiting.

“Thanks for coming, Miles,” Detective Jones said.

“Hi, Miles,” Jewel said, her eyes were red and tear-stained.

“Hey, Jewel. You’re looking a lot better tod—”

“Okay,” Jones interrupted, “I know we have gone over this several times, but we have some new information, and I’m hoping one or the both of you can help.”

“Okay,” I said.

Jewel asked, “Did you find the man that killed Dennis?”

“No, we haven’t,” Detective Jones said. “We are, of course, following every single lead. That said, our primary lead is the man on the security camera seen conversing with Dennis after you left him.”

“Oh,” she said.

“That same man was seen coming to your place of residence during the time you were missing, Jewel. He knocked on your front door, but according to your neighbors, no one answered, and he left.”

“So, who is this man?” I asked.

“We still don’t know,” Detective Jones said. “The quality of the video footage from the DeSoto Falls parking lot isn’t great, but we did get a decent still out of it— the one we showed you earlier. However, it appears that he may have stopped at a nearby gas station about twenty minutes after speaking with Dennis.”

Jewel cleared her throat. “Okay.”

“This mystery man that we’re trying to find went into the gas station, where he was captured on video there. We now have a clearer picture of him. Do either of you recognize this man?”

Detective Jones pulled a photograph out of a manila folder and held it up in front of me and Jewel.

I studied the picture for a moment. “I’m almost certain I’ve never seen that man.”

“No?”

“No, I don’t remember ever seeing him.”

“Is it possible that you have seen him before and just don’t remember?” the detective asked.

“Of course, that’s possible. I see people all the time, and I don’t know who they are or remember what they look like,” I answered.

“Okay, okay,” Detective Jones said. “What about you, Ms. Baker, have you seen the man in this photo before?”

“No.”

“You seem certain,” Jones said, tilting his head forward at Jewel.

“I am certain. I’ve never seen him.”

“He came to your house when you were missing, no?”

Jewel sighed.
