It wasn’t until lunchtime that my surly, sleep-deprived boyfriend sauntered into Brook’s Books.

His broodingly handsome disposition reminded me of the iconic Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. “Darcy was clever. He was at the same time haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well-bred, were not inviting.”

Yup. Not-inviting was Alex’s middle name these days—well, actually, it was Herbert, which always made me giggle—but I was seriously thinking the guy should consider changing it. Between this investigation and his mom’s birthday, the poor guy was dealing with a lot. As much as I felt for him, I was beginning to understand Elizabeth Bennett and her frustration with Darcy’s churlish attitude toward everything a little too well.

Hamburger ran over to greet him, apparently unaware of his sour state. Of course, he picked her up and then let her lick his chin for a few seconds, cracking the first smile I’d seen him make in a while. He scratched behind her ears before setting her down and then patted off the white fur she’d left behind on his black uniform.

“Hi,” I said, bright and cheery, hoping to capitalize on the good mood Hammy had gotten him into. I walked up and slipped my arms around him.

Alex sighed and folded over me, pulling me close. “Hey.” He sank his chin onto the top of my head and I breathed in his soapy, clean, Alex smell.

“Sorry we fought.” I snuggled closer.

“Me too.” His chest rose and fell in a deep breath.

“Rough day?” I asked.

He nodded.

I pulled him tighter and let him relax for a few moments.

“Would you be mad if I had to make it a teensy bit more complicated?” I kept myself tucked safely under his chin, too worried to come out yet.

But I didn’t need to look up to know his reaction. I could feel it as he stiffened.

“Your bad feeling.” His words were resigned, like someone standing in front of a insurmountable hill, knowing the struggle about to befall them.

“Yeah,” I said, finally meeting his gaze as I stepped back. “I’m not saying you should let Duncan go…” I bit my lip and worked up the courage to say the next part. “It’s—well—I think there’s cause to keep looking, is all.”

“I thought you were convinced it was Duncan,” he said.

I nodded. “But then I had a very enlightening chat with Karla this morning which I think you’ll be interested in.”

Alex let his head drop forward, his hand swiping across his stubbly chin and working its way up his face. “What did she say?”

Grabbing his hand and giving it a quick squeeze, I said, “Let’s start from the beginning. What is Duncan saying about his alibi? Why did he lie?”

“Well, now we have a third alibi. First it was having coffee in his hotel room, then it was coffee at Bittersweet, and now he’s saying he lied because he really was at the trailer. He was looking for Tommy, wanted to apologize since they got in a fight the night before. He couldn’t find Tommy, so he left to walk around town for a bit.
