Talk about an OMG moment!
Marcella had mousy brown hair to Loviniaâs platinum blonde, and Marcella was petite whereas Lovinia was Amazonian. Staring into Marcellaâs red-rimmed eyes earlier, Iâd seen something that hadnât registered at the time but had since itched like a cerebral mosquito bite. I now realized behind those glasses with their thick lenses hid Loviniaâs eyes.
Those blank green eyes had stared up at me last night and would forever be etched into my brain. I hadnât noticed the similarity earlier because yesterday Iâd been focused on Lovinia throughout the drama unfolding at the hotel registration desk. Iâd noticed Marcella more in terms of her body language, not any specific features. Even if I had paid more attention to her, the physical distance between us, coupled with her glasses, probably would have prevented me from getting a good look at her eyes.
However, Blake knew nothing of Loviniaâs reputation as the Queen of Romance. Heâd observed both women with equal impartiality and noticed what Iâd missed. For that matter, what everyone else had missed, as well, given that neither Paisley nor any other author had mentioned anything about the two women being related. Who knew my husband was a budding Sherlock Holmes?
Questions played pinball inside my head, bouncing back and forth frenetically. How could all the other SARA authors, who had known Lovinia and Marcella for so many years, not see the resemblance? Many of them had come in contact with Lovinia and Marcella countless times. Did Loviniaâs constant histrionics and egotistical personality overshadow her mousy assistant to the extent that everyoneâs focus dwelled constantly on Lovinia and only Lovina? Was Marcella always hidden in plain sight, swallowed up by the dark hole of Loviniaâs shadow? After all, people see what they want to see. No one ever really saw Marcella because she faded into the woodwork.
This blood connection must be what caused Marcella to put up with Loviniaâs crap and stay with her all those years. But if so, why keep the relationship a secret?
âEarth to Gracie.â
I glanced down at Blakeâs hand shaking my knee. âHuh?â
âWhere were you?â
âLost on the Isle of Confusion. Youâre absolutely certain theyâre related?â
âOf course not but I saw a striking resemblance, especiallyââ
âIn their eyes.â
âThat and their ears.â
âTheir ears?â Blake noticed Lovinia and Marcellaâs ears?
âThey have the same ears.â
I stared in amazement at my husband. Who notices peopleâs ears unless theyâre enormous and standing out from their heads? âShould I be worried you were checking out other women so intently?â
âSlow-moving line. The unexpected drama broke up the monotony.â
âMaybe you should offer your powers of observation to Detective Vanwhatshisname.â
âIf heâs questioned Marcella, he most likely already knows of the relationshipâif there is one.â
âHow could there not be one with what youâre telling me?â
Blake shrugged. âIt could be a random genetic coincidence.â
Right. And little green men from Mars built the pyramids.
My buzzing phone interrupted us. I fished it out of my messenger bag and checked the display. âI have to leave,â I told Blake. âThe SARA luncheon starts in fifteen minutes.
