Do Record the Individual Steps within Social Interaction

Interaction is complex, made up of many different steps involving multiple people doing multiple things. In this, you want to know, ideally, what all of the key people in the field note are doing. Here is an excerpt from an excellent field note written by Sherelle Ferguson as part of her dissertation research on class and race variations in college students’ interaction with college officials. In her observations at an expensive, nonselective college, she shows how Maya, a Black woman from a working-class family, was anxious about approaching her Anatomy professor with a question. During the lecture on bones, Ferguson reported that Maya “wondered aloud” to her friend Alicia (a Latina middle-class student) whether almond milk had benefits for bone strength. Ferguson, a Black sociology doctoral student in her late 20s, attended the lecture with them, and carefully noted all of the steps where Maya was reluctant to ask the professor and pressured her friend to ask, and the events after Alicia makes the inquiry:
